Harris Dominates As Ducks Shutout No. 2 Arizona
04/29/05 | Softball
EUGENE ? Eugene native Amy Harris made sure last season's win over the top-ranked Wildcats at Howe Field wasn't a fluke. Harris struck out 10 batters and allowed just three hits to lead the Ducks to a 3-0 shutout over No. 2 Arizona before 393 fans at Howe Field Friday afternoon. It is just the third time this season that Arizona has lost by shutout and marks the first time since the 1999, 2000 seasons that they have dropped back-to-back games in Eugene.
"I am just so happy with the way we played as a team," Harris said. "Our defense played amazing and we came up with big hits when we needed to. That's something we had been struggling with, but today we put it all together and this is a huge win for us."
After giving up two first inning hits, Harris (13-10) retired 13 consecutive batters ? eight by strikeout ? before Crystal Farley's fifth inning single gave Arizona its third baserunner of the game. Farley's hit would be Arizona's last as Harris sat down the next four batters. Coming into the day, Arizona boasted the Pac-10s best batting average and leadoff hitter Caitlin Lowe, who leads the nation with a .519 average, was 0-for-3 on the day.
"This was a total team effort today," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "I'm so pleased that we were able to give Amy the offense that she needed and that we played flawless defense. I am just so pleased for our players. This is a great win."
Oregon second baseman Erin Goodell got Oregon's first hit of the game in the bottom of the third inning and Arizona pitcher Alicia Hollowell (22-6) then walked sophomore Suzie Barnes to put runners and first and second. Junior Breanne Sabol's infield single loaded the bases with two outs and Goodell scored from third on a wild pitch by Hollowell to give Oregon the first lead of the game, 1-0.
Senior catcher Ashley Richards added to the lead with a solo home run in the fifth inning ? her third of the season and second career against Hollowell. In 2004, Richards hit the game-winning home run off Hollowell in the eighth inning and today's solo shot is her first home run in Pac-10 play since that homer last season. Sabol made it 3-0 later in the inning with an RBI single to left field that scored Barnes, who had sinlged earlier in the inning.
Harris continued her dominance in the sixth and seventh innings, retiring six of seven batters to record her sixth shutout of the season. She is now tied for eighth all-time with seven career shutouts.
The Ducks continue Pac-10 play tomorrow vs. Arizona State at 3 p.m.
