05/20/05 | Softball
NORMAN, Okla. ? Third-seeded Louisiana-Lafayette hit four home runs to defeat the second-seeded University of Oregon softball team, 7-5, in the opening game of the NCAA regional tournament at the OU Softball Complex in Norman, Okla., Friday evening.
With the win, the Ragin' Cajuns improve to 51-8 overall and advance in the winners bracket to face No. 1 seeded Oklahoma Saturday at 11 a.m. The Ducks (34-24) will face Wichita State -- which fell 2-0 to the Sooners in the nightcap -- Saturday at 1:30 p.m. PDT.
"We had several opportunities in the game and we weren't able to get the timely hitting we needed," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "The good thing is we have another game tomorrow and I know we can and will play better."
Junior third baseman Beth Boskovich pulled Oregon within 6-5 with a two-out three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Boskovich finished the game 1-for-1, but reached base in all four of her at bats after being hit twice and walked once prior to her home run. She now has 20 career home runs, which is ninth all-time at Oregon. The Ducks had runners in scoring position in the first, third and fourth innings, but left eight runners stranded in the game. Sophomore Kayleen Hudson, who finished the game 1-for-2, drove in the first run of the game and scored the Ducks' second run in the sixth inning. Sophomore Kristi Leiter was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Breanne Sabol accounted for the Ducks' other hit.
Louisiana-Lafayette right fielder Danyele Gomez hit her 20th home run of the season ? a one-out solo shot in the first inning ? to give the Ragin' Cajuns the first lead of the game, 1-0.
Oregon threatened with one out in the bottom of the first inning, loading the bases on a single by Leiter and two hit batters by ULL pitcher Brooke Mitchell. Mitchell responded with two strikeouts to get out of the inning and not allow an Oregon run.
Junior pitcher Amy Harris (17-15) didn't allow a hit in the second and
third innings, but the Ragin' Cajuns' second hit of the game was a three run home run by Lacey Bertucci in the fourth inning that extended Louisiana-Lafayette's lead to 4-0.
The Ducks cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single by that scored Sabol, who had singled to lead off the inning. Mitchell then walked Suzie Barnes and Lovena Chaput to load the bases with two outs, but got Leiter to ground out to end the inning. Louisiana-Lafayette got the run back in the fifth inning, taking a 5-1 lead after a double steal by Ashley Evans and Joy Webre.
A solo home run by ULL third baseman Tiffany Herbert in the sixth inning made it 6-1 before the Ducks rallied back in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs on an RBI by Letier and Boskovich's home run.
The Ragin' Cajuns made it 7-5 with their fourth home run of the game ? a solo shot to left field by Webre ? in the seventh inning and ULL reliever Heather Bobbitt retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
