Oklahoma Fights Off Ducks To Advance In NCAA Tournament
05/22/05 | Softball
NORMAN, Okla. ? Top-seeded and 10th-ranked Oklahoma defeated the University of Oregon softball team, 2-1, in the final game of the NCAA regional tournament Sunday afternoon in Norman, Okla., to improve to 50-15 overall and advance to the super regional beginning May 27.
The Ducks (36-25) won two must-win games on Saturday to advance to Sunday's matchup with Oklahoma and a chance to play in the super regional next week. After an opening-game loss to Louisiana-Lafayette Friday, Oregon defeated Wichita State and Louisiana-Lafayette Saturday and would have needed to beat the Sooners twice on Sunday to advance.
Oregon pitcher Amy Harris (18-16) had two strikeouts and just one earned run in four and two thirds inning pitched against Oklahoma to finish the season with the Oregon single season strikeout record (203). Harris' season ERA of 1.30 is the lowest in nine years and she owns the all-time strikeout record with 478 career strikeouts.

Offensively, sophomore Kayleen Hudson led the Ducks in the regional tournament, finishing the four games 4-for-8 (.500) with four RBI, a home run, a double and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Hudson had at least one hit in all four games to lead Oregon's offense all weekend.
Oklahoma's offense struck early as the Sooners took a 2-0 lead in the first inning after third baseman Norrelle Dickson and center fielder Kristin Vesely led off the inning with back-to-back singles. A deep fly ball to right field by Christina Enea that was caught by Kayleen Hudson advanced Dickson to third. During Oklahoma's next at bat, Vesely stole second and Dickson stole home to put the Sooners ahead 1-0. Catcher Heather Scaglione then singled to left field and an Oregon error on the play allowed Vesely to score an unearned run and extend Oklahoma's lead to 2-0.
Oregon had runners at second and third after back-to-back singles by Ashley Richards and Kayleen Hudson in the bottom of the second inning, but Keiter forced a pop out followed by a groundout to end the inning.
The Ducks got on the board in the fifth inning after a single by Erin Goodell and a double by Suzie Barnes put runners at second and third with one out. Freshman left fielder Lovena Chaput then drove in Goodell on a groundout to second base that pulled Oregon within a run, 2-1.
Reliever Alicia Cook, who limited Louisiana-Lafayette to just one hit in a win Saturday, came in with one out in the fifth inning and retired seven consecutive batters to keep the Ducks' chances alive. In two appearances, Cook posted a 0.00 ERA (9.1 IP) with just one hit and held opponents to a 0.33 batting average.
Oregon put runners at first and second with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Keiter forced a pop out and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to prevent Oregon from scoring the tying run. The Ducks continued to battle in the seventh after a one-out single by Barnes put the tying run on base. A single by Chaput in the Ducks' next at bat put the go ahead run on with one out , but Keiter struck out the Ducks' next two batters to secure the victory.
