
LaVoie Opens NCAA Golf Championships with a 72

OWINGS MILLS, Md. ? Oregon's Gregg LaVoie shot a 2-over 72 and was tied for 49th after the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, played Monday at the par-70, 7,131-yard Caves Valley Golf Club.
LaVoie, a junior from Pasco, Wash., had three birdies and five bogeys in the first round. He played the front nine three strokes over par, with bogeys on the second, fourth and fifth holes. Then things got a bit more adventuresome on the back nine.
He birdied holes 10 and 11 to get back to 1-over, but dropped a shot on No. 12. Following a par on No. 13, he birdied the 14th, but bogeyed No. 16, before coming home with a pair of pars.
Kevin Kisner of Georgia and Major Manning of Augusta State were tied for the opening round lead at 5-under 65. Aron Price of Georgia Southern was third at 66.
Kisner led Georgia to the first day lead at 6-under 274. Tennessee was second at 279, while Arizona was third at 282.
The second of four rounds will be played Thursday.
