EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - Kellen Clemens threw for 275 yards, and Paul Martinez set a school record with six field goals in Oregon's 47-14 win over Division I-AA Montana on Saturday.
Demetrius Williams had five catches for 93 yards and a touchdown, and nine other Ducks caught passes, but Oregon failed to establish a running game for the second straight week.
Terrence Whitehead, a 1,000-yard rusher in 2004, had just 35 yards on 18 carries, after running for 31 yards in a win over Houston last week. The Ducks (2-0) finished with just 87 yards on the ground.
The Grizzlies (1-1) stayed close early but weren't consistent enough on offense.
Bowling Green transfer Jason Washington was 10-for-23 passing for 85 yards for Montana, which beat Fort Lewis 55-0 last week and is ranked third in Division I-AA. Tailback Lex Hilliard had just 15 yards on 13 carries.
The Ducks improved to 10-1 in home openers under head coach Mike Bellotti, who tied Len Casanova for second on the school's all-time wins list with his 82nd victory.
Martinez, a junior who shared time at kicker last year, has 11 field goals in Oregon's first two games. The Ducks had only nine field goals all of last year.
The Ducks went up 6-0 when true freshman Jonathan Stewart picked the opening kick off the turf and returned it for an 83-yard touchdown.
Martinez hit field goals of 26 and 40 yards on the next two possessions to make it 12-0, but the Grizzlies got back in it. First, they stopped Whitehead on fourth-and-1 at the Montana 4 and then recovered the fumble on a botched backfield pass by Clemens.
On the next play, Washington hit Jon Talmage for a 23-yard TD score.
From then on it was all Ducks.
Clemens found Williams for a 17-yard touchdown pass. An interception and a fumble recovery on the next two possessions set up two more field goals. Martinez made his fifth of the day just before halftime to put the Ducks up 27-7.
GAME NOTES
Today's crowd of 58,168 marked Oregon's 37th consecutive sellout at Autzen Stadium.
Paul Martinez set Oregon and Autzen Stadium single-game records with six field goals vs. Montana. The six field goals also tied a Pac-10 record (John Lee, UCLA vs. San Diego State, 1984). His five first half field goals established a Pac-10 record, breaking the mark of four held by four different players. And his six FG attempts ? for the second week in a row ? tie the school record. Martinez has scored 34 of Oregon's 85 points this season and has 11 field goals, which surpasses Oregon's total field goals (9) in all of 2004. After just two games, Martinez is now 11-for-12. It is also the most successful field goals kicked by opponent facing Montana.
Today's win was Head Coach Mike Bellotti's 82nd career victory, which ties him for second all-time with Len Casanova. Bellotti now trails only Rich Brooks' 91 wins.
Jonathan Stewart became the first Oregon player to run a kickoff back for a touchdown since Kenny Washington (at UCLA, 11-15-03) ran a kick back 97 yards. Stewarts 83-yard return came on just his second kickoff return of the season. He had one at Houtson for 29 yards.
Montana's seven first downs is the fewest allowed by an Oregon defense since holding Arizona to just seven first downs in a 16-10 Oregon win Sept. 30, 1989. The Ducks limited Montana to just two first downs in the first half.
Jordan Kent's first career reception was a 40-yard catch from Kellen Clemens in the first quarter vs. Montana.
One week after his first career rushing touchdown, quarterback Dennis Dixon hit Kyle Weatherspoon for a 39-yard touchdown pass ? the first TD pass of Dixon's career and the first TD reception for Weatherspoon.
With 36 yards rushing today, Terrence Whitehead moved to sixth all-time on the UO career chart, passing Onterrio Smith (2001-02; 2,199 yds.) and Don Reynolds (1972-74; 2,210 yds.). Whitehead now has 2,220 career rushing yards.
Senior cornerback Aaron Gipson had his second interception in as many games and now has eight career picks, which is three shy of breaking into the top-10 all-time at Oregon.
Darius Sanders had a career-high four tackles in the game and his first three tackles of the game were for a loss of 17 yards.
Oregon is 10-1 in home openers under Head Coach Mike Bellotti. The Ducks have won 20 of their last 21 home openers. Oregon is now 7-0 all-time vs. Montana.
