Ducks Eighth After Two Rounds at NCC

CORVALLIS, Ore. ? The Oregon men's golf team shot rounds of 293-286 Monday and was in eighth place following the first day of the season-opening Northwest Collegiate Classic, played at the par-70, 7,070-yard Trysting Tree Golf Course.
Junior Matt Ma and freshman Landon Banks were tied for 18th at 3-over 143 to lead the Ducks. Ma, from Aiea, Hawaii, shot rounds of 71-72, while Banks, from Beaverton, Ore., had rounds of 73-70.
"We're just sort of treading water in the middle of the pack," said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. "We're going to have to come back and play real strong tomorrow if we want to get the season off to a good start."
Junior Dustin Pewachuk, competing unattached, was the only other Duck golfer in the top 40. The Victoria, B.C., native was tied for 32nd at 146 following rounds of 72-74.
Oregon State's Vincent Johnson blazed to the top of the leaderboard with rounds of 67-66 for a 7-under total of 133. Johnson staked the Beavers to the first day lead at 560, one shot better than Washington State and Long Beach State.
Texas-Arlington was fourth at 562, UC Irvine was fifth at 565, New Mexico State was sixth at 573, Saint Mary's was seventh at 578 and Oregon was eighth at 579.
The final round will be played Tuesday morning.
