THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. ? Oregon shot its best score of the tournament, a final round 6-over 290 Tuesday, but it wasn't enough to make up much ground as the Ducks finished 11th at the Ashworth Invitational.
Oregon struggled to find its footing in completing Monday's weather-delayed second round at the par-71, 6,900-yard North Ranch Country Club course, in which the Ducks ended up with a 23-over 307. But led by Gregg LaVoie, who tied for 18th at 6-over 219, Oregon held off No. 19 San Diego State for 11th place and a quality head-to-head win. The Ducks tallied a three round composite of 892, while the Aztecs had an 895. Oregon State tied Fresno State for 13th at 919.
LaVoie shot a 1-under 70 in the final round to earn his ninth career top-20 finish and match his best tournament of the season in tying for 18th. The senior from Walla Walla, Wash., carded a 4-over 75 as he completed his second round Tuesday morning, but bounced back in the final 18 three birdies to go with a pair of bogeys in carding his second-lowest round of the season.
Sophomore Derek Sipe closed with a roller coaster 78-72 to finish tied for 27th at 9-over 222. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native had an eagle and a pair of birdies in his final six holes to get back to 1-over in the final round. It was Sipe's best finish of the season and third-highest of his career.
Also for Oregon, freshman Landon Banks tied for 35th at 11-over 224
Pepperdine shot a final round 3-under 281 to win the tournament by nine strokes over USC, 861 to 870. Stanford finished third at 873 with No. 5 UCLA and Oklahoma tied for fourth at 875. No. 6 Brigham Young finished sixth at 876, followed by Tennessee (880), Washington (882), Georgia Southern (876) and Coastal Carolina (887).
Oklahoma's Anthony Kim ran away with the individual title by shooting a 4-under 67 to finish 9-under for the tournament (204), seven strokes better than, Stanford's Zack Miller.
