Softball Sweeps UAB In Final Tune Up Before Conference Action

EUGENE ? Oregon junior Kayleen Hudson drove in freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Ducks to a 3-2 win over UAB in the first game of a doubleheader at Howe Field Tuesday afternoon. In the second game, Oregon scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed, eventually winning 4-1. With the sweep, the Ducks improve to 17-10.
Senior pitcher Amy Harris picked up the win in the first game to improve to 8-4 overall this season while sophomore Alicia Cook got the victory in the second game to improve to 2-1.
In the first game, Hudson led off the bottom of the second inning with an infield single and freshman catcher Courtney Shlee advanced Hudson to second with a sacrifice bunt. Senior Beth Boskovich then singled to center field to put runners at first and third and junior Joanna Gail drove in Hudson with an RBI to put Oregon ahead 1-0 after two innings.
The Blazers capitalized on three Oregon errors in the third inning to score two unearned runs and take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Lovena Chaput tied the game, 2-2, with a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The game remained knotted through seven innings and the Ducks kept UAB scoreless in the top of the eight before scoring the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
Oregon scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game after an RBI single by Sabol followed by a UAB error. The Ducks scored a fourth run in the third inning when Hudson scored on a second Blazer error to extend the Ducks' lead to 4-0.
UAB got on the board in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Jacy Leon that scored Leigh Walker, who had doubled to lead off the inning. It was as close as the Blazers got as Cook retired the next two batters to end the game.
Oregon opens Pac-10 play this weekend, hosting No. 9 Arizona State Friday at 3 p.m.
