Bruins Sweep Away Ducks
04/14/06 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE ? The University of Oregon men's tennis team was swept by defending national champion UCLA, Friday falling 7-0 at the Student Tennis Center.
“Were trying to get everybody healthy but it takes time,” head coach Kevin Kowalik said. “They are the defending national champions and we knew we were in for a tough match.”
Oregon was right in the doubles match nearly pulling out the point. At number two Markus Schiller and Vlad Pino defeated Haythem Abid and Chris Surapol, 8-5. Thomas Bieri and Gustavo Loza nearly locked the doubles point up for the Ducks as they took a 6-3 lead over the third ranked team of Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Philipp Gruendler. Gruendler and Kohlloeffel were able to mount a comeback however and won, 8-6.
“We were right in the doubles, I was happy with the effort if we play with that kind of energy we will always have success,” Kowalik said.
Oregon was unable to score a victory in singles play as the Bruins swept the day.
“Tomorrow it's all about playing for the seniors and trying to accomplish something we haven't done in program history and beat USC,” Kowalik said.
Oregon wraps up their 2006 home season tomorrow against USC, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Ducks will say goodbye to seniors Thomas Bieri, Markus Schiller and Arron Spencer.
