Roland Leads Oregon Invite Dec After First Day

EUGENE ? In first day action Thursday in the Oregon Invitational decathlon, Wisconsin's NCAA veteran Ben Roland paced the field after five events with a score of 3,731 points.

The senior from Green Bay, Wis., owned a 60-point advantage over Tyler May of Team XO who followed in second place (3,671).

Other first-day finishers included the Oregon pair of freshman Alexey Shkuratov (third, 3,577) and senior Cody Fleming (fourth, 3,549), Sacramento State's Daniel Rennich (fifth, 3,435) and Wisconsin's Brennan Boettcher (sixth, 3,363).

Roland posted first-day marks of 11.41 in the 100 (w:2.2), 22-2 1/2 in the long jump (w:1.7), 43-2 1/2 in the shot put, 6-3 1/2 in the high jump and 50.51 in the 400, and his long jump mark topped the field.

In his decathlon debut for UO, Shkuratov's first-day marks follow: 11.30 (w:2.2) in the 100, 21-8 in the long jump, 38-10 1/4 in the shot put, 6-4 3/4 in the high jump and 52.40 in the 400.

The Minsk, Belarus native Shkuratov ranked second in the first event, the 100 meters, and topped his former decathlon best of 11.35. His other still-valid decathlon marks are 23-6 (long jump), 45-6 1/2 (shot put), 6-7 1/2 (high jump) and 52.25 (400).

Fleming's marks Thursday included 11.63 in the 100 (w:2.2), 21-8 3/4 in the long jump (w:2.2), 44-4 in the shot put, 6-4 3/4 in the high jump and 53.92 in the 400.

The Reno, Nevada native claimed a two-inch long jump personal best to rank second in the event, and his other still-valid first-day personal bests from 2005 follow: 11.35 (100), 45-7 3/4 (shot put), 6-7 (high jump) and 51.90 (400).

Former UO NCAA champion and Argentinian Olympian Santiago Lorenzo started the competition but was forced to withdraw because of a previous leg injury midway through Thursday's competition.

Second-day decathlon action resumes Friday at approximately noon, and the competition will likely end between 4-5 pm. Admission is free for the decathlon, and live results updates are available at the www.GoDucks.com website.

Afterwards Friday evening, several high-caliber events will take place, including a new distance carnival. Tickets will be necessary for the all-star evening session, and the Bowerman Building ticket office opens at 4:30 p.m.

The Friday evening session starts at approximately 6 pm, and features a 3-hour window that will showcase the meet's best men's and women's distance fields in the 1,500-10,000 meters from 7:40-10:40 p.m. Top collegiate and post-collegiate distance talent on hand includes U.S. Olympians Dathan Ritzenhein, Jonathon Riley and Marla Runyan, and other world class runners from Belgium, Canada, Japan and Kenya.

Saturday morning's early session - which includes 'B' sections of many of the running and field events - runs from 10:00 am ? 12:00 p.m., and admission is free.

Following a lunchtime intermission, single-day tickets are required for the Saturday afternoon ?High Performance” session that will feature the remaining events in a 2:00-5:30 p.m. window.

After Saturday's meet, a free Oregon Track Club (OTC) kid's all-comers meet will be staged from approximately 5:45-6:30 p.m. Events include the 60,100 and 400 meters, long jump and softball throw. More information may be made available at the Oregon Track Club website ( www.oregontrackclub.org ).
