Oregon Falls in Washington, 5-0
04/21/06 | Softball
SEATTLE, Wash. ? Washington starter Danielle Lawrie limited the Duck offense to just two hits and struck out 14 batters en route to leading the 14th-ranked Huskies to a 5-0 win over Oregon Friday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium in Seattle, Wash. With the win, Washington improves to 29-13 overall, 3-5 Pacific-10 Conference while the Ducks fall to 19-14, 1-4.
Friday's game marked the Ducks' first action since a 2-0 win over Portland State 10 days ago. Washington had not played since a 6-0 loss to No. 1 UCLA a week ago. Both program's battled weather and missed some Pac-10 action last weekend.
The Duck offense struggled to find its rhythm as senior Dani Baird accounted for both of Oregon's hits ? a single down the right field line in the second inning and a single to left field in the seventh inning. Lawrie (17-8) walked two, struck out 14 and scattered just two hits in her 17th win of the season. Oregon freshman Melissa Rice (6-4) took the loss for the Ducks.
The Husky offense got going early as they took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a two-out single by third baseman Sarah Hyatt followed by a double by Aimee Minor. Dena Tyson continued the two-out rally, driving in both players with a two-RBI line drive.
First baseman Ashley Charters made it 3-0 Washington with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning, scoring leadoff hitter Dominique Lastrapes, who had doubled to start the inning. Hyatt then extended the lead with a two-run home run to make it 5-0.
Oregon will fly to Los Angeles, Calif., Friday evening and will take on the top-ranked Bruins Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
