04/26/06 | Softball
CORVALLIS ? The eighth-ranked Oregon State Beavers used a pair of home runs to defeat the University of Oregon softball team 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader after winning 4-3 in the first game. With the sweep, Oregon State improves to 35-7 overall, 7-4 Pacific-10 Conference while Oregon falls to 19-18, 1-8.
The Ducks combined for eight hits in the first game, led by catcher Courtney Shlee, who finished the game 2-for-3. Six other players had at least one hit, including Joanna Gail, who hit her fourth home run of the season. In the second game, Oregon was led offensively by senior Breanne Sabol and sophomore Lovena Chaput, who each went 2-for-3. Sabol accounted for the Ducks' lone RBI.
In the first game, Oregon struck first as freshman Sari-Jane Jenkins singled in the first inning and scored on an RBI single by senior Beth Boskovich to make it 1-0 Oregon.
The Beavers got the run back in the bottom of the inning when leadoff hitter Cambria Miranda hit a home run ? her fourth in as many games ? to tie it 1-1. Shortstop Mia Longfellow then hit an infield single and Adrienne Alo doubled to left center field to put runners at second and third with no outs. Pitcher Brianne McGowan gave Oregon State its first lead of the game, 2-1, with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Longfellow.
Gail tied the game, 2-2, with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth inning and the Ducks capitalized on back to back Oregon State errors to take a 3-2 lead with two outs later in the inning. The Beavers responded in the bottom of the inning, tying the game for a third time on an RBI double by catcher Lisa Allen that scored Kellie Roberts, who was running for McGowan.
The game remained tied until the seventh inning when first baseman DeAnn Young hit a double to leadoff the inning and scored on an RBI single by Allen to give the Beavers a 4-3 win. McGowan improved to 22-4 with the win while Duck freshman Elise Orange (2-3) took the loss.
Oregon had the early lead in the second game as well, going ahead 1-0 on a two-out double by Breanne Sabol that scored first baseman Kristi Leiter, who had walked with one out. But again, the Beavers used a solo home run to tie the game, this time a two-out shot by second baseman Paige Lowe. Miranda then hit her fifth home run in as many games to give Oregon State its first lead, 2-1, in the sixth inning. It was all the scoring OSU needed as starter Ta'Tyana McElroy (13-3) retired the side in the seventh to secure the win. Duck starter Alicia Cook (3-6), gave up just two hits, but took the loss for Oregon.
