ASU's Johnson and Kinnaman Lead Pac-10 Hep/Dec First Day

EUGENE - In the first day of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships heptathlon and decathlon, presented by 76 ProClean Gasolines, Arizona State's Jacquelyn Johnson and Joshua Kinnman led their respective fields at the event hosted Saturday by the University of Oregon at Hayward Field.
Kinnman tallied a five-event decathlon score of 3,957 points for a 77-point lead over Arizona's Jake Arnold (second, 3,880), Oregon freshman Alexey Shkuratov (third, 3,776), Stanford's Josh Hustedt (fourth, 3,713) and Oregon senior Andy Young (fifth, 3,495).
The ASU sophomore Kinnaman opened the day with a .13-second win in the 100 meters (11.07, w:1.4) over Arnold, then repeated the same placing in the day's final event, the 400 meters (49.56), .48 seconds ahead of Arnold (second, 50.04).
Arnold won the shot put (44-4) by seven inches over ASU's Ryan Ehler (second, 43-7) and Kinnaman (third, 43-3 1/4), and Stanford's Hustedt claimed the long jump win (23-8, w:0.0) by four inches over Kinnaman (second, 23-4).
The home crowd encouraged Oregon's Shkuratov for nearly a half hour at the end of the high jump as he raised and re-raised his decathlon event best by 3 1/2 inches for the win (6-10 3/4) over senior teammate Andy Young who also claimed a 1 1/4 inch best (second, 6-6) to tie with Hustedt and Arnold at the same height.
Other competitors that ranked top eight in the overall first-day standings included Oregon redshirt junior Brian Bartow (sixth, 3,479), California's Scott Sobieralski (seventh, 3,462) and UCLA's Matthew Reuter (eighth, 3,402).
Other Ducks competing in the event include redshirt senior and event neophyte Jon Derby (11th, 3,297) and senior Cody Fleming (12th, 3,229).
Shkuratov's first-day tally was a 199-point best, Bartow is making his event season debut, and Derby is competing in his first-ever decathlon as the team looks for as many points as possible in its defense of its Pac-10 team crown from 2005.

In the women's heptathlon, Johnson built up a 200-point advantage on the field with a first-day personal best score of 3,615 points.
The Yuma, Ariz., native and 2004 league champion netted individual heptathlon personal bests in all four of Saturday's events and led the 13-woman field in each specialty - the 100-meter hurdles (13.49, w:.05), high jump (5-10), shot put (40-8 1/4) and 200 meters (24.62, w:-1.1).
Returning 2005 league champion Julie Pickler of Washington State followed in second place (3,415) and owned first-day marks of 13.78 in the 100 hurdles (w:1.8), 5-6 1/2 in the high jump, 39-1 in the shot put and 24.77 in the 200 (w:-1.1).
Pickler's 100-meter hurdles clocking was a new personal best, and her shot put mark was her second-best ever. She ranked second overall in the field in the hurdles, high jump and shot put and third overall in the 200 meters - .11 seconds behind Arizona's Shevell Quinley (second, 24.66, w:-1.1).
Oregon senior Lauryn Jordan followed in third place overall with 3,315 points - only 22 points off her first-day personal best from the Mt. SAC Relays in mid-April. The Stockton, Calif., native opened the afternoon with a .29-second personal best in the 100-meter hurdles (14.05, w:1.2), and added marks of 5-6 1/2 in the high jump, 37-5 3/4 in the shot put and 25.09 (w:-1.1) in the 200 meters.
Other athletes in the top eight overall included Arizona's Shevell Quinley (fourth, 3,234) Stanford's Lauren Stewart (fifth, 3,187), California's Tifani Grimes (sixth, 3,081), UCLA's Georgea Richards (seventh, 3,027) and Oregon freshman Kalindra McFadden (eighth, 3,001).
The Bozeman, Mont., native McFadden overcame a fall in the first hurdle of the opening event, the 100-meter hurdles, and quickly got up to still finish (16.66, w:1.3), then scored a heptathlon personal best in the next event, the high jump (5-6 1/2). Later in the afternoon she added marks of 38-9 3/4 in the shot put and 25.14 in the 200 meters.
Oregon redshirt senior Roslyn Lundeen initiated her second Pac-10 heptathon appearance and stood 13th overall with 2,325 points. The three-time javelin All-American should climb the standings Sunday in her single event specialty the second day.
Action resumes in second and final day action Sunday at 12:15 p.m. with the decathlon 110-meter hurdles, while the first women's event is the long jump at 1:30 p.m. The women's heptathlon should end at approximately 3:40 p.m., and the men's decathlon could end between 5 and 6 pm, depending on the length of the pole vault.

"It was a good day. They said I had four personal bests, although I wasn't sure about the high jump mark, so I have to be happy. I'd been waiting for this meet for a year since I missed last year to focus on basketball. I came in ready to go and completely healthy. The level of the conference and competition is great as usual. The weather was nice but cool. I'm usually used to a little warmer conditions in Tempe, Ariz., so I just wore some extra layers, and I felt fine. The wind changed in the 200 at the end to a headwind on the homestretch. Looking back, I should have gone out a little harder and attacked the curve early before the wind, but you can't control that. In the high jump, it felt pretty good, and my technique clicked. In the shot put my first throw was perfect technically."

"After I ran a 100 hurdles open best of 13.92 last week, I knew if I cleaned it up I could get a PR today (she ran 13.78, w:1.8). I haven't been able to practice my run-up in the high jump for a month (because of plantar fasciitis in her takeoff foot), so I did my best to keep up my speed on my approach. I had my second best-ever shot put (39-1, compared to her 39-3 in the 2005 NCAA meet). In the 200, I lost my legs a little and got behind them and didn't stay relaxed. Overall, I tried to focus on just myself and not Jackie, although she was having such a great day, it was hard not to sneak a peak. (About twin sister Diane, also an NCAA auotmatic qualifier this season with a season best of 5,579 points)) She had an indoor injury that she tweaked last week in a high jump attempt at 5-10, so she decided not to compete here and focus on NCAA's. I know it's hard for her not to be out here, but she's been really mature and has kept her focus well."

"I didn't have any great events, so I just tried to work through it today and keep moving on from event to event. My long jump was pretty good (23-4) and my best-ever is 24 feet or so, and I had attempts just under my high jump best of 6-6 (and he cleared 6-4 3/4). Tomorrow, I need to do well in the pole vault. My personal best if 14-9, but I've been jumping at 15-5 in practice and clearing that, so that would really help."

"I had a muscle in my calf ball up a little halfway through the 400 meters, so I tried to run as relaxed yet as hard as I could the second half. Today was my first full run-up in the high jump outdoors this year because of an injury from the NCAA indoor meet, so it was nice to be able to go back the whole way and not have to use a short approach like I did earlier this season. I didn't have any individual decathlon PRs, but most of them were pretty close, and I did have an overall first-day PR. My second day is usually better than my first, so I'm looking forward to Sunday."
