Track Teams Advance Six in NCAA Second Day
06/08/06 | Track and Field
On the women's side, freshman Rebekah Noble ranked third in the 800 meters semifinal and finished second in the second heat (2:05.49). The
Redshirt senior teammate Sara Schaaf missed advancing to Saturday's final by .62 seconds and ranked 10th overall (2:06.49)), while the eighth and final qualifier was clocked at 2:05.87 Thursday.
Schaaf and Noble had advanced to Thursday's semifinal after they ranked sixth (2:06.37) and seventh (2:06.37) in the 28-woman prelims Wednesday. Two weekends ago, Noble and Schaaf punched their NCAA tickets with first- and fourth-place finishes in the West Regional (2:06.45/2:09.23).
Schaaf's time in Wednesday's prelim was a .55-second personal over her previous best (2:06.91) and moved her to ninth all-time for UO past Francie Faure (2:06.39, 1988) and Stephanie Morris (2:06.80, 1988). Noble already ranked fourth all-time for UO with her personal best (2:02.85) from the Oregon Twilight.
In other distance action Thursday, redshirt senior Amber McGown won the second of two preliminary heats in the women's 1,500 meters with a .59-second personal best, and edged freshman Frances Koons of Villanova (second, 4:18.67) and sophomores Elizabeth Maloy of Georgetown (third, 4:18.86) and Megan Kaltenbach of North Carolina (fourth, 4:18.87).
The Melfort,
Also advancing to Saturday's 12-woman final, Villanova senior Marina Muncan won the first heat (4:16.17) over
In other women's track action, sophomore Kasey Harwood made her Duck debut in the 400-meter hurdles and finished sixth in her heat and 27th overall (61.40).
The Polson,
Harwood had earned her first NCAA invitation in the event thanks to a fifth-place finish and personal best from the West Regional (59.79) ? a mark she was within .06 seconds in both the Pac-10 Championships prelim (59.84) and West Regional prelim (59.85).
Overall in the event, Miami senior Dominique Darden led the field (56.56), ahead of UCLA freshman Nicole Leach (second, 56.61) and Auburn seniors Josanne Lucas (third, 57.05) and Markita James (fourth, 57.21).
In the field, redshirt junior Britney Henry and redshirt senior Brittany Hinchcliffe advanced to Saturday's 12-woman hammer throw final and ranked fourth (210-5) and ninth (198-6) in the 28-woman prelims Thursday.
Henry opened with a mark of 203-10 (62.13m), threw her best on her second throw 210-5 (64.14m), then passed her final attempt since she topped the 64.00-meter automatic qualifying standard (210-0).
Hinchcliffe threw her daily best on her first throw, then followed with a foul and final effort of 197-0 (60.06m).
The duo entered the meet seeded third and eighth with their season and Duck bests of 221-7 and 210-5 that rank them first and second in school history.
Overall in the event Thursday, recent West Region champion Eva Orban led the field by 10 inches (first, 214-3), and was followed by national leader Jenny Dahlgren (second, 213-5), a junior from Georgia who had thrown a six-foot, six-inch collegiate record (236-3) in her regional two weekends ago. That same regional weekend, Hinchcliffe and Henry had placed third and fourth in the West Regional in
In pole vault qualifying action, junior Emily Enders tied for 22nd in the event prelims (12-9 1/2) and was only two bars from advancing to Saturday's final. The Snohomish,
Enders entered the meet seeded in a tie for eighth based on her season and personal best from the West Regional two weekends ago (third, 13-7 3/4) ? a mark that also ranks her third all-time for Oregon behind recent Duck All-Americans Becky Holliday (first, then-collegiate record 14-8) and Niki McEwen (second, 13-11 1/4).
Overall outdoors in '06, Enders cleared 13 feet in three outdoor meets ? the Trojan Invitational (first, 13-5 3/4), Oregon Invitational (fifth, 13-1 1/2) and NCAA West Regional (third, 13-7 3/4) ? and was only a half-inch shy a month ago in the Pac-10 Championships (eighth, 12-11 1/2).
On the men's side Thursday, senior Akobundu Ikwuakor stood 14th overall and fourth in the fourth of five prelim heats in the 400-meter hurdles, thanks to a .03-second season best (50.77). The
Overall in the event,
Ikwuakor was one of 16 intermediate hurdlers that advanced to Friday's semifinal, and also looks ahead to Saturday's 4x400-meter relay final as the quartet of seniors Travis Anderson and Matt Scherer, Ikwuakor and redshirt junior Jordan Kent finished second in the second of three heats (3:04.91) and ranked fifth in the 18-team field.
UO's 4x400-meter effort Thursday evening was a 1.41-second season best and the eighth-fastest time in school history, and also improved on their prior season best of 3:06.32 from their third-place West Regional finish two weeks ago that ranked them 15th entering the meet.
Overall in the event, LSU clocked the fastest time in the prelims by 1.04 seconds (3:03.50) over TCU (second, 3:04.54) and Baylor (third, 3:04.54).
The Duck relay is the second to advance to an event finals in as many days after the 4x100-meter squad of senior Richard Del Rincon, Scherer, freshman Derrick Jones and Kent took second in Wednesday's third preliminary heat (39.45). Overall, the Ducks stood seventh in the 18-team field, while LSU posted the fastest time Wednesday (38.87) over Texas A&M (second, 38.97) and UTEP (third, 39.21).
Both quartets claimed All-America honors in the NCAA finale in 2005 and finished third (3:00.81) and sixth (39.20), respectively, with current school records.
In field event duty Thursday, freshman Matthew Maloney improved on his pre-meet seed and stood 18th in the javelin prelims (207-6).
The
Maloney entered the meet seeded 20th in the 26-man field thanks to his season and collegiate best of 224-11 from the Oregon Invitational in mid-April ? a mark that ranks him seventh all-time for UO and third among collegiate freshmen this year.
Maloney had earned his NCAA invitation thanks to a near season best in the West Regional two weekends ago (third, 222-5), and Thursday's mark was his third of 205 feet or better in the last five meets of the season, while he tossed 204-11 in another meet in that span.
Full NCAA meet results this season are available at the www.HornetSports.com website, and more pre-meet information is also at the www.NCAAsports.com website.
Looking ahead to Friday's third-day action,
10 am Hep. 100m Hurdles/High Jump/Shot Put /200m (Lauryn Jordan, Kalindra McFadden)
