Improved Pilots Upset Ducks, 78-74
12/02/07 | Women's Basketball
PORTLAND, Ore. ? Despite gutsy efforts by Taylor Lilley and Kaela Chapdelaine, the Oregon women's basketball team was its own worst enemy, turning the ball over 27 times en route to a 78-74 loss at the hands of host Portland on Sunday at Chiles Center.
Lilley, who had a visible limp for stretches during the contest, led the Ducks with 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting. The sophomore guard was 3-of-8 from three-point range in her 36 minutes of action.
For Chapdelaine, the team's lone senior, she dealt with back issues throughout but chipped in nine points and a team-high five assists before fouling out with 22 seconds to play.
The Pilots (6-2), a much-improved side from the team that lost by 28 points at McArthur Court a year ago, never trailed by more than a point and held the lead for the final 35 minutes and change. They nearly let a double-digit lead slip away, but avoided costly miscues and turned the ball over just 13 times.
Oregon closed within four points at 67-63 with 2:46 to play, but UP countered nearly every made bucket by the Ducks down the stretch.
Sophomore Laiken Dollente led all scorers with 21 points, including 13-of-14 shooting from the foul line. She was one of four Pilots in double figures.
Oregon shot an impressive 49.2 percent for the game and out-rebounded Portland, 43-26. But the Pilots scored 28 points off turnovers to UO's 14, and made all but one of their 22 free throw attempts to salt away their fourth-ever win in 24 meetings with the Ducks.
A big bright spot for the Ducks was the play of freshman Ellyce Ironmonger, who had 18 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The Aussie post picked up the slack for fellow frosh Nicole Canepa, who failed to score and fouled out in 13 minutes.
Another UO product from Down Under, freshman Victoria Kenyon, had 10 points in her first extended action this season.
After trailing by as many as 15 points with under four minutes to play in the first half, Oregon rallied to close the gap to six points at the break, down 34-28.
Kenyon sparked the Ducks off the bench with eight points on 4-of-4 shooting to lead all scorers after the opening period. Lilley added seven points and Ironmonger had six points.
The Ducks shot 46.4 percent to UP's 36.1 percent in the first half, but were hindered by 13 turnovers and 0-of-2 shooting from the free throw line.
The game was the first of back-to-back trips to Portland for Oregon. The Ducks will return Sat., Dec. 8 to play UC Santa Barbara at the Rose Garden at the 10th annual Pape Jam.
QUACK TRACKS: All four of Portland's wins in the series have come at home (1997, 2001, 2003, 2007) ... Ironmonger and Kenyon had career-highs in scoring for the Ducks Canepa entered the game as UO's leading scorer ... Oregon is now 0-2 in road games this season.
