
Sipe?s Sizzling Spring Continues

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii ? Junior Derek Sipe continued his hot spring by shooting a 3-under 67 Wednesday in the opening round of the UH Hilo Intercollegiate. Sipe, who is coming off a tie-for-fifth at last week's Ping Arizona, was tied for 10th after one round, three shots back of co-leaders Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech and Joseph Bramlett of Stanford.
As a team, Oregon was tied with for eighth with No. 8 USC at 5-under 275, seven stokes off the pace at the par-70, 6,738-yard Waikoloa Village Golf Club.
In addition to Sipe, Oregon counted a pair of 68s from junior Joey Benedetti and Marcus Sostak. The two were tied for 17th. It was the best round of his young career for Sostak, a freshman from Costa Mesa, Calif.
Bramlett helped second-ranked Stanford jump to the first day lead at 12-under 268. Oregon State was second at 10-under 270, followed by two-time defending champion and 20th-ranked Georgia Tech and No. 25 Arizona State at 272.
No. 3 Oklahoma State and UC Davis were tied for fifth at 273, with Kansas in seventh a shot ahead of the Ducks and Trojans at 274.
Santa Clara and Washington led the second half of the field in 10th at 276, followed by Texas Tech (277), Colorado (279), Texas Christian and Hawaii (282), Pacific (284) and Oklahoma in 17th at 285.
The UH Hilo Intercollegiate continues with the second round on Thursday, followed by a final 18 Friday.
