Ma Leads Oregon Duck Invitational
03/27/07 | Men's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. ? Oregon's Matt Ma shot a 3-under 141 Monday to jump to the lead of the Oregon Duck Invitational.
The senior from Aiea, Hawaii, holds a one-shot lead on UCLA's Kevin Chappell and Jamie Lovemark of USC heading into Tuesday's final round, which will start at 8 a.m.
Monday, as players competed in chilly conditions with intermittent showers and temperatures in the upper 40s at the par-72, 7,033-yard Eugene Country Club, No. 6 USC took the 36-hole lead by shooting rounds of 282-295 for a 577 total.
In addition to Lovemark, USC counted a 145 from Rory Hie, a 147 from Jordan Nasser and a 148 from Joshua Wooding. All four Trojans were in the top 20.
The two in-state schools were nipping on the Trojans' heels.
Oregon State was in second place with a 579 total, thanks to James Allenby's 1-over 145.
The host Ducks were third at 580. In addition to Ma's 141, Oregon counted 147s from freshman Marcus Sostak and junior Joey Benedetti. The two were tied for 13th at 3-over. Junior Derek Sipe shot 76-72 and was tied for 17th at 148.
No. 9 UCLA was fourth at 587, followed by No. 21 Arizona State and Arizona tied for fifth at 590, Washington in seventh at 591, California in eighth at 592 and San Diego State ninth at 595.
Top-ranked Stanford struggled and was 10th at 597. Washington State (598) and Pacific (629) rounded out the field.
In the individual race, only six players shot par or better. Ma, Chappell and Lovemark were joined by three players at even-par 144: Alex Prugh of Washington, Michael Jensen of California and Knut Borsheim of Arizona State.
In the morning, USC was hot despite the weather, shooting a 6-under as a team. Lovemark led the Trojans by carding a 5-under 67, while Nasser had a 71 and Wooding a 72.
Ma, who has struggled this spring, opened with a 3-under 69 as Oregon played the opening round at 1-under par 287 as a team. The Ducks also counted a 72 from Sostak and 73s from Benedetti and junior Zeke Reyna.
It is the second time this season that Ma has held the overnight lead at a tournament. He was the second round leader at the Northwest Collegiate Classic in Corvallis, Ore., and went on to win that event.
