Lawrie Pitches One-Hitter in Washington's Victory Over Oregon

SEATTLE, Wash. ? Washington sophomore Danielle Lawrie picked up her third win of the season against Oregon, pitching six innings in an 8-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at Husky Softball Stadium.

The 11^th-ranked Huskies complete the season sweep of the 16^th-ranked Ducks, and improve to 32-13 overall and 9-6 in the Pacific-10 conference.

Oregon, which has lost six of its last seven, falls to 39-14 overall and 4-11 in the Pac-10.

Coming into the game, only Jenn Salling (.548) and Joanna Gail (.316) were hitting above .300 against Pac-10 competition.

Lawrie improves to 21-8 on the season after striking out 10 on the day and pitching a perfect game through 4.2 innings, before allowing a two-out single to Gail that dropped into shallow left field. That would prove to be the only hit that Lawrie would allow all game.

Lawrie is now 5-0 against the Ducks over the last two years.

Oregon sophomore righthander Melissa Rice took the loss for the Ducks, allowing eight runs (five earned) on six hits in 5.2 innings of work. The Colville, Wash., native struggled with her location during the game, walking six Husky batters.

With junior Alicia Cook out of the lineup for the majority of the Pac-10 season with illness, Rice has appeared in the Ducks last 19 games, dating back to an 8-0 shutout of Idaho State on March 24. She has started in 17 of those appearances, including Oregon's last 10 games..

Washington got on the scoreboard first and never relinquished the lead, scoring four runs in the first inning. Senior Dominique Lastrapes first found a hole in Oregon's defense, splitting Gail and Salling and sending a RBI single into left field. With two runners on, Lauren Greer's RBI double hit off the wall in left center got the Huskies second run across the plate. Washington's third run was scored by Tyson on a wild pitch and Lawrie's RBI groundout scored the fourth.

Rice settled down after the first, holding the Huskies scoreless through the next four innings.

The reigning National and Pac-10 Player of the Week, Dena Tyson then led off the sixth with her 17^th home run of the season over the right field wall. The Huskies then ended the game early, totaling three additional runs in the inning with Ashley Charters producing the game-ending, two-run double into the left center gap.

Oregon plays its last non-conference game of the season on Wednesday at Portland State.

The Ducks will then return to Howe Field next weekend, hosting Arizona (4 p.m., May 4) and Arizona State (1 p.m., May 5 and 6).

Oregon Director of Athletics Pat Kilkenny is expected to throw out the first pitch at Saturday's game, and the weekend will serve as the final home series for three members of the Ducks' senior class; Suzie Barnes, Kristi Leiter and Ann Marie Topps.

After Saturday's game the Oregon softball program will also host its annual awards banquet. The social will start at 6 p.m. in the Mallard Banquet Hall (First Ave. and Monroe), dinner will begin at 7 p.m., followed by an awards ceremony and recognition of the 2007 senior class with a video tribute.
