
Ducks Finish 19th at NCAA West Regional

TEMPE, Ariz. ? Oregon shot a 4-under 284 Saturday to finish 19th at the NCAA West Regional, played at the 7,057-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course.
South Carolina shot a 10-under 278 to defeat UCLA by two strokes. For the tournament, the Gamecocks finished at 44-under 820, while the Bruins were at 822.
The top 10 teams at Karsten advanced to the NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 in Williamsburg, Va. In addition to South Carolina and UCLA, teams advancing were USC and Arizona State at 824, Vanderbilt at 826, Arizona at 828, Stanford at 831, New Mexico at 833 and Wake Forest and East Tennessee State at 839.
Oregon State also finished tied for ninth at 839, but lost in a playoff for a spot to the national championships. After OSU, the second 10 included Pepperdine at Brigham Young tied for 12th at 841, Washington at 842, California at 843, Colorado State and Nevada-Las Vegas tied for 16th at 844, Augusta State at 847, Oregon at 857 and Nevada at 861.
Benjamin Alvarado or Arizona State won medalist honors by shooting a 6-under 66 Saturday to finish at 18-under 198. He defeated Kevin Chappell of UCLA, Jon Curran of Vanderbilt and Jamie Lovemark of USC by three strokes.
Individually for the Ducks, junior Joey Benedetti finished tied for 62nd at 3-under 213 after a final round 72. Senior Matt Ma shot a 4-under 68 to tie for 81st overall at even par 216. Junior Derek Sipe tied for 86th at 217 after a 71 on Saturday.
The NCAA West Regional concludes Oregon's first season under new head coach Casey Martin. The Ducks' 857 total was seven strokes below par.
