10/18/08 | Women's Tennis
STANFORD, Calif. - Stephanie McFarlane won her first round match on Friday night as the Oregon women's tennis team competed in the opening rounds of the ITA Northwest Championships at Stanford's Taube Family Tennis Center.
MacFarlane drew Santa Clara's Kimmi Cox in her opening round match and put away her opponent in quick fashion, 6-1, 6-2. In the second round, however, the sophomore was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Cal Poly's Maria Malec.
The Ducks also won first round matches in the doubles bracket.
Pavlina Smatova and MacFarlane paired up to defeat USF's Jessy Mekpoh and Sarah Oudomvilay 8-4 before falling 8-6 to Saint Mary's Marah Calvo and Nienke Strijbis.
Also in the doubles pool, Carmen Seremeta and Claudia Hirt teamed together in winning 8-3 against UC Davis's Herzyl Legaspi and Emma Shapiro. But like their teammates, the duo dropped its second round match 8-3 to California's Jana Juricova and Marion Ravelojaona.
In other singles action, Siobhan Cavan was forced to retire from her match against Fresno State's Tinesta Rowe due to injury after going 1-1 in the first set.
Smatova, after redshirting last season, dropped the first collegiate singles match of her career 6-2, 6-1 to Cal Poly's Brittany Blalock.
Seremeta also fell in her opening round match, losing 6-4, 6-1 to South Florida's Ceciia Gratian. Fellow senior, Ana Cecilia Olivos, also lost her first match of the fall season, 7-5, 6-2 to Washington's Aleksandra Malovic.
In Oregon's other doubles match in the first round, Siobhan Cavan and Trudie du Toit withdrew from competition after Cavan's injury in singles play.
A consolation singles bracket will begin competition on Saturday with play beginning at 1 p.m.
