Five UO Golfers in Top 15 in Ihlanfeldt Day 2
10/07/08 | Women's Golf
SAMMAMISH, Wash. ? The No. 31 University of Oregon women's golf team continued to shine Tuesday against a talented Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational field in second round action at the Sahalee Golf Club near Seattle.
No. 37 Stanford moved into the lead (303-303-606) with the day's second-lowest round and stood two strokes ahead of first-day leader, No. 31 Oregon (second, 299-309-608). No. 30 Oregon State (306-312-318) was tied for third place with No. 16 California (310-308-618), and the teams stood one stroke ahead of No. 40 San Francisco (321-298-619) and No. 46 Long Beach State (316-303-619) who were tied for fifth place.
Other teams in the 13-team field included Washington (seventh, 310-310-620), Washington State (eighth, 324-304-628), BYU (ninth, 318-313-631), Idaho (10th, 315-317-632), Eastern Washington (11th, 330-309-639), No. 12 New Mexico (12th, 319-322-641) and New Mexico State (13th, 317-326-643).
Individually for UO, sophomore Monika Graf shot a 78 Tuesday to hold onto her top-10 place overall (seventh, 73-78-151). Three other Ducks were tied for 13th place ? sophomores Erica Omlid (78-75-153), Felicia Eastick (77-76-153) and Kendra Little (73-80-153) ? and junior Kate Hildahl (41st-tie, 76-86-162) rounded out the Oregon contingent.
Omlid led UO for the first time in her career in 26 collegiate rounds, and her 3-over 75 Tuesday tied her collegiate best that she shot three times her freshman campaign in 2007-08.
The Springfield, Ore., product Omlid carded birdies on the par-4 fourth and eighth holes, shot par on 12 holes, and ended bogeys on the par-3 fifth, par-5 sixth, par-4 12th and par-3 13th holes.
Eastick overcame double bogeys on the par-4 first and par-3 ninth holes to claim birdies on the subsequent par-5 second and par-4 10th holes. She had another birdie on the par-3 13th hole, and single bogeys on the par-4 eighth and 12th holes, and ended with par scores on the other 10 holes.
At the top of the individual leaderboard, Long Beach State's Kay Hoey climbed from fifth place into the top slot (74-71-145), just ahead Stanford's Mari Chun (second, 75-71-146), Idaho's Kayla Morellaro (third, 74-73-147) and Oregon State's Lauren Archer (fourth, 75-73-148).
"It was fairly windy today, so it made an already challenging course a little more difficult," Oregon head coach Shannon Rouillard said, "but we tried to grind through it like everybody else. It says it plays at 6,130 yards on the scorecard but it felt more like 6,400 since a storm went through last night and made it fairly wet. Monika and Erica played well yesterday, and Erica and Felicia played well today with Felicia shooting 1-under on the back side today. It's been different people for us each day, and that's kept us in the hunt with only one round left."
The Ducks entered the day atop the team leaderboard (299) ? four strokes ahead of the Cardinal - after they had five players in the top 20 overall Monday. Graf was tied for second overall with a two-shot collegiate best (73) with Little, and the pair were followed by Hildahl (12th-tie, 76), Eastick (17th-tie, 77) and Omlid (20th-tie, 78).
Looking ahead, the Ducks return for the third and final round Wednesday. UO's first player tees off the first tee at 9:30 a.m., and regularly updated hole-by-hole results will be updated at the www.GolfStat.com website. More tourney information is available at the www.GoHuskies.com website.
