Porter, Ducks use deep ball to beat K-State

EUGENE, Ore. - Junior guard Tajuan Porter scored a season-high 28 points to lead the University of Oregon men's basketball team to a 75-70 home win over Kansas State on Sunday, Dec. 7, in Eugene, Ore. The Ducks, participating in the Pac-10/Big 12 Hardwood Series, improved to 4-4 overall and snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory. The Wildcats lost their third straight and dropped to 5-3 overall.
Freshman guard Garrett Sim had 16 points and sophomore forward LeKendric Longmire added 13 for UO. Sim added a career-high six rebounds to lead all Ducks in that category. Senior guard Churchill Odia added six points, a career-high six assists and two steals while making his second consecutive start.
Oregon shot 47.8 percent from the field (22-of-46), while hitting 9-of-20 on 3-pointers (45.0 percent). The Ducks finished 22-of-31 from the free throw line (71.0 percent). KSU was limited to 41.5 percent shooting (27-of-65) and 21.1 percent on 3-pointers (4-of-19). The Wildcats went 12-of-18 from the charity stripe.
Kansas State was led offensively by Denis Clemente who had a team-best 19 points. Clemente went 8-of-20 from the field, 2-of-8 on 3-pointers, in 34 minutes of action.
K-State held a 39-10 advantage in points from bench players. Jamar Samuels, Ron Anderson and Fred Brown combined to score 36 of those points. Samuels was 8-of-8 on free throws en route to 14 points, Anderson went 6-of-7 from the field for 12 points and Brown made 2-of-4 3-pointers in his 10-point effort.
The Wildcats maintained a sizeable advantage for points in the paint, 40-18. KSU out-rebounded UO, 39-28, including a 17-6 difference in offensive boards.
The score was tied eight times and the lead changed five times in the first half. Oregon's largest lead was six points, a 31-25 lead with 4:17 remaining in the half. Kansas State's largest first-half advantage was five points, 21-16 at the 8:38 mark. A 3-pointer by Clemente as time ran out on the first half gave KSU a 38-35 lead at the half.
Oregon (4-4) returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 13, with a game against San Diego (4-5) as a part of the 2008 Pape' Jam in Portland, Ore. Tip-time is scheduled for 5 p.m. (PST) at the Rose Garden Arena.
