Oregon Extends Winning Streak to Four Matches

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Oregon men's tennis team extended its winning streak to four matches with a 5-2 victory over Portland on Tuesday afternoon.
The Ducks are now 10-7 on the year.
Oregon got off to a fast start by winning the doubles point by taking the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. The tandem of Alex Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco defeated Filip Zivkovic and Charlie Yemm, 8-5. Oregon's Geoff Embry and Romeo Mortera defeated Even Schleining and Bryan Thorp, 8-2 to clinch the doubles point at No. 2.
The Ducks did drop their doubles match at No. 3 as Portland's Joel Kincaid and Renaldo Domoney knocked off Francisco Gallardo and Stephen Wiechert, 7-6 (7-5).
“This is a very good win for us over a very scrappy Portland team,” Director of tennis Nils Schyllander said. “We started the match well at doubles and that really set the tone for us the rest of the day.”
Oregon struggled at No. 1 and No. 2 singles as Verdasco fell to Kincaid, 6-3, 7-6, in the top spot. Gallardo also dropped his singles draw at No. 2 to Zivkovic, 6-3, 6-4.
The Ducks swept the rest of the singles matches to ensure the victory. Cornelissen, improved his singles record to 10-7 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Dylan Pottish at the third position.
At the fourth spot, Embry outlasted Thorp, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. Mortera found success at the No. 5 spot, defeating Schleining, 6-4, 6-0. The Portland native has won his last four matches for the Ducks.
Finally, Wiechert was also victorious, 4-6, 7-6, 10-0, in the No. 6 spot over Domoney. Wiechert is now 8-3 on the season.
