No. 20 San Diego State Hangs on, Defeats Ducks 3-2
03/02/08 | Softball
SAN DIEGO ? The 20th-ranked San Diego State Azteks scratched out just enough offense against Oregon ace right-hander Alicia Cook, and the Ducks managed only two runs despite eight hits in a 3-2 loss at the San Diego Classic on Sunday.
Cook (5-5) held the tournament hosts to four hits, but SDSU (16-5) made the most of them, rallying from an early 1-0 deficit with a three-run third. All told, the senior struck out seven and walked three over six complete.
Oregon ends the weekend with a record of 13-9, heading into Wednesday's non-conference home opener against Portland State at Howe Field.
Christina Ross improved to 10-4, scattering eight hits and a walk in her complete-game effort. She allowed both UO runs and struck out five.
Kayleen Hudson's third dinger in as many days brought the Ducks to within a run in the fourth. The redshirt senior crushed a 0-1 pitch through a stiff wind into the bleachers in left.
In the bottom of the third, the Azteks put up a three-spot on three hits and a walk, scoring two of those runs on close plays at the plate for a 3-1 advantage.
The Ducks got to SDSU's ace southpaw for a run in the first, when Lovena Chaput hit a well-placed single through the right side to score Sari-Jane Jenkins from second base for a 1-0 lead.
Jenkins led Oregon with two hits, going 2-for-4. Six Ducks had one hit apiece.
QUACK TRACKS: Cortney Kivett extended her hitting streak to nine games with a 1-for-4 performance ... Oregon went 4-2 on the road trip, losing only to ranked opponents.
