Oregon Drops Pac-10 Opener to No. 4 USC, 6-1
03/28/08 | Men's Tennis
The Oregon men's tennis team opened up play in the Pacific-10 Conference on Friday hosting the league's top-ranked team, No. 4 USC, at the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks fell 6-1 to the Trojans in the conference opener as USC improved to 14-3 on the year. Oregon had its five-match winning steak snapped and fell to 11-8 on the season.
Oregon's solo victory came at the No. 5 spot in the lineup as sophomore Geoff Embry kept his singles winning streak alive with a three-set marathon win over USC's Jason McNaughton, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8.
The Phoenix, Ariz., native improves to 9-5 on the year with the win, and has not dropped a match in his last eight played.
"We played a good match," Director of Tennis Nils Schyllander said. "Geoff really stepped up and Stephen (Wiechert) and Romeo (Mortera) we're right in there. This young group is definitely progressing."
Mortera and Wiechert each took their respective matches to three sets, but couldn't clinch victories. Mortera's five-match winning streak was ended with his 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 loss to Abdullah Magdas at the No. 4 position, while Wiechert allowed Andrew Piotrowski to come from behind for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory at the No. 6 spot.
Each of the three Oregon players in the Ducks' top half of the lineup fell in straight sets. Marcos Verdasco lost 6-3, 6-3 to Kaes Van't Hof, currently the 46th-ranked singles player in the nation, at the top spot.
Francisco Gallardo fell 6-2, 6-4 to Jaak Poldma at the No. 2 spot, while Alex Cornelissen played the 54th-ranked player in the nation, Gary Sacks, at the No. 3 position and fell 6-3, 6-3.
Oregon was swept in doubles action with the closest score coming at No. 3 spot as Gallardo and Wiechert fell 8-7 to the team of Jack Levis and Poldma.
The team of Embry and Mortera suffered an 8-3 loss at the No. 2 spot to the tandem of Magdas and Sacks. At the top spot, Cornelissen and Verdasco dropped an 8-5 decision to Van't Hof and Piotrowski.
The road doesn't get any easier for Oregon as the team hosts No. 6 UCLA (12-1) at 2 p.m. tomorrow inside the Student Tennis Center.
