Bristow?s Record Final Round Helps Ducks to Sixth in IU Invite
04/08/08 | Women's Golf
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. ? Junior Cathryn Bristow's record final round (65) Tuesday helped the No. 44 University of Oregon women's golf team climb three positions into sixth place in the Indiana Invitational.
Bristow (fourth, 76-74-65-215) broke the UO single round record by two strokes with her seven-under 65 Tuesday ? rewriting the former record (5-under 67) set by freshman teammate Kendra Little a month ago in the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational.
“I was really excited to play that well,” Bristow said, “It helps to validate the hard work I've put in recently and over the years. I was able to hit my approach shots really close ? a lot of them were within 10 feet. My putting was really good, and I was able to read the greens well, although I didn't have any long putts since I was hitting really long and accurate with my irons.”
Tuesday on the par 72, 5,938-yard Crooked Stick Golf Course, Bristow birdied five holes on the front nine, added two more birdies on the par-4 12th and 18th holes, and parred the other 11 holes. “I started on eight, and I hit a bad shot into one of the bunkers,” Bristow said. “It was a difficult shot, but I hit it within three feet of the hole and that helped me get par. That gave me a good feeling that things would be good today.”
The Huapai, New Zealand foreshadowed her success in Monday's second round when she had four birdies, but a double-bogey on the par-3 17th and four other bogeys left her with a 2-over 74.
“Yesterday, I was playing well but not scoring well, so I had confidence that I could change that today,” Bristow said. “At the end I was starting to get a little nervous. I recognized that, and told myself to be relaxed and take one shot at a time.”
Bristow has now led UO in four straight rounds and five of the last seven. Including the fall season she has carded UO's low score in 13 of the season's 30 rounds ? a stretch also includes 10 scores of par or better and seven since February. Among her 10 tournaments this year, she has paced UO four times and ranked second in three other stops.
Tuesday marked Bristow's fourth straight top-10 overall finish that began with a win and school record tourney score at UNLV (first, 208), followed by the Duck Invitational (sixth, 224) and NCAA West Regional Preview (second, 217). She had two more top-10 efforts in the fall in the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational (eighth, 221) and San Francisco Invitational (second, 219).
“I've been working hard on the weaker parts of my game ? especially my short game within 100 yards,” Bristow said. “This season it means a lot to be able to take my game to the next level, especially as an upperclassmen. Some of the younger girls come to you for advice as expected, so it's nice to do well and be able to validate what you say by your play.”
Among other Ducks, sophomore Felicia Eastick and freshman Kendra Little added top-25 finishes and tied for 24th place at 227. Little shot a 74 Tuesday after 80-73 scores Monday, and Eastick came back with a 77 Tuesday after 74-76 scores Monday.
Other Duck entries included sophomore Kate Hildahl (52nd-tie, 78-81-79-238) and junior Blair Ressler (75th, 78-82-87-247). Freshman Erica Omlid also played Tuesday as an individual (72nd-tie, 76-81-89-246).
As a team, UO's final round 295 helped it improve three positions Tuesday (306-304-295). The Ducks' sub-300 score was their seventh of the spring's 15 rounds, and 11th overall including the fall slate.
Overall in the team standings Tuesday, No. 6 Purdue won the championship by 42 strokes (279-282-291-852) in the 15-tournament that featured six top-50 squads.
Ohio State climbed a position into third place (second, 295-300-299-894), and was followed by Illinois (third, 294-307-297-898), No. 28 Texas (fourth, 302-300-297-899), No. 49 UNLV (fifth, 299-291-310-900) and No. 44 UO (sixth, 306-304-295-905).
On the individual leaderboard, the Boilermakers owned the top three positions and four of the top seven spots overall, courtesy of Junthima Gulyanamitta (first, 67-68-74-209), Maria Hernandez (second-tie, 72-69-82-213), Maude-Aimee Leblanc (second-tie, 69-74-70-213) and Christel Boeljon (seventh, 71-71-75-217).

CATHRYN BRISTOW COMMENTS
“Everything went really well today. I was really excited to play that well. It helps to validate the hard work that I've put in recently and over the years. It was key that I was able to hit my approach shots really close ? a lot of them were within 10 feet. My putting was really good, and I was able to read the greens well, although I didn't have any long putts since I was hitting really long and accurate with my irons. ... Yesterday, I was playing well but not scoring well, so I had confidence that I could change that today.”
“I started on eight, and on my first hole, I hit a bad shot into one of the bunkers. It was a difficult shot, but I hit it within three feet of the hole and that helped me get par. That gave me a good feeling that things would be good today. At the end I was starting to get a little nervous. I recognized that, and told myself to be relaxed and take one shot at a time. My mind still wandered a little between shots sometimes, but once I got to the ball I was able to focus on the ball. That's another thing I've been working on is - staying focused and relaxed between shots.”
“The course was beautiful. At times there was a lot of water, so there were four or five holes where you had to place your tee shots well, while thinking about your approach shots. If you placed it the wrong way, it could make it really tough to be 'up and down'. The weather was a little windy, and at times it swirled on a few tees shots. Other than that it was perfect.”
“Before today, Shannon told us to stay patient. She said that we are a good team so just let it happen, stay in the moment, and take one shot and one hole at a time.”
(Difference this season, particularly the spring) “I've been working really hard on the weaker parts of my game ? especially the short game within 100 yards. I've done lots of putting, and worked on getting down the speed of the greens, and being really consistent in that 10-foot range from the hole. I have more confidence in those areas now.”
“It means a lot to be able to take my game to the next level, especially as an upperclassmen. Some of the younger girls come to you for advice as expected, so it's nice to do well and be able to validate what you say by your play.”
