EUGENE - The No. 12 University of Oregon volleyball team (10-1) continued its successful march through the preseason Sunday and swept Seattle University (2-9) - its seventh opponent to falter in straight sets the last eight matches.
UO won the contest with scores of 25-14, 25-13, 25-12, giving the home squad 32 sets won this year in its first 11 matches, compared to just five sets for its opponents in that span.
The Ducks - who played 14 players - hit .494 as a team, and held Seattle to a .098 mark - the fourth Duck foe to hit under .100 this season.
The UO offense was balanced with a season-high 10 players notching kills. Sophomore Heather Meyers had a match-high nine, and seniors Kristen Forristall and Gorana Maricic each had eight.
Other Ducks with kills included senior Marija Milosevic (5), juniors Nevena Djordjevic (2), Neticia Enesi (5) and Sonja Newcombe (5), and all three true freshmen had season highs in the category - Betsy Sedlak (2), Dana Stephenson (2) and Rhiannon Tooker (1).
Also on offense, Djordjevic had 22 assists in her two sets of play and sophomore Rachel Morris added 12. Four Ducks logged service aces - Maricic (2), Newcombe (2), junior Amanda Westrick (1) and Meyers (1).
Senior Katie Swoboda again led UO in digs (15), and the Duck career leader finished in double digits for the ninth time this season. Enesi paced the team in blocks (3), while Meyers and Forristall each had two.
“We played much better this match in terms of our defense and our preparation," Oregon head coach Jim Moore said. "We were able to block balls at the beginning, but then we didn't have as many opportunities because they made a lot of hitting errors. We played a lot and won a lot this weekend, and overall it was good. We're better off than we were before.”
Seattle was led in kills by Cristin Richards (6) and hitting and blocks by Janet Beckerman (.333, 4 kills, 2 blocks). Other Redhawk category leaders included Jamie Mellies (15 assists, 2 aces) and Emily Deleissegues (9 digs).
Looking ahead, the Ducks host Portland at McArthur Court ,Tuesday, September 16, at 7 p.m., then have a bye weekend. UO travels the following weekend to the Bay Area to open the conference slate at a pair of returning Final Four qualifiers - California and Stanford - on Friday-Saturday, September 26-27, respectively.
