CORVALLIS, Ore. ? The No. 26 University of Oregon women's golf team paired with their men's counterparts Monday to lead the combined results from opening two rounds of the Giustina Memorial Classic, hosted by Oregon State at Trysting Tree Golf Course.
The Duck women shot scores of 291 and 303, and their 594 overall score paced the 10-team women's field by seven strokes. Oregon State had the second-best women's score (303-298-601), and was followed by Washington State (third-tie, 312-293-605) and San Francisco (third-tie, 301-304-605).
Other women's teams on-hand Monday included Fresno State (fifth, 311-306-617), Nevada (sixth, 306-312-618), Sacramento State (seventh, 302-324-626), Boise State (eighth-tie, 314-315-629), Idaho (eighth-tie, 312-317-629) and Portland (10th, 316-319-635).
On the individual front, junior Kate Hildahl (71-70-141) and sophomore Kendra Little (69-73-142) stood first and second overall, and were followed by Oregon State's Cara Freeman (third, 69-73-142).
UO senior Cathryn Bristow also ranked top 10 overall on the par 72, 6,282-yard course (ninth-tie, 76-74-150), and the Ducks' other scorer was sophomore Monika Graf (37th, 75-86-161).
Coming into the season, Hildahl had logged three collegiate rounds of par 72 or better, and added two more to that tally Monday, while Little's first round 69 was likewise the 13th of her career. The Tualatin, Ore., native Hildahl had led UO eight times previously among her 59 collegiate rounds as a freshman and sophomore, including two last spring in the Pac-10 Championships when she tied for 16th overall. Little's first-round team low was her 15th career-wise for UO.
The youthful Duck men stood sixth on their side of the result board (282-289-571), and trailed Washington State (first-tie, 290-275-565), San Francisco (first-tie, 283-282-565), Nevada (third-tie, 283-286-569), Oregon State (third-tie, 286-282-569) and Portland (fifth, 293-277-570).
UO men's individual results follow: Eugene Wong (11th-tie, 70-72-142), Robbie Ziegler (18th-tie, 69-74-143), sophomore Isaiah Telles (18th-tie, 72-71-143), Andrew Vijarro (28th-tie, 71-74-145) and sophomore Eric Grimberg (35th-tie, 74-72-146).
Combining men's and women's team scores, UO led by five strokes (1165), over Oregon State, San Francisco and Washington State (second-tie, 1170), Nevada (fifth, 1187), Fresno State (sixth, 1192), Portland (seventh, 1205), Idaho (eighth, 1207), Boise State (ninth, 1214) and Sacramento State (10th, 1217).
Looking ahead, UO returns for its final round Tuesday, September 23 with tee times set between 7:45-9:45 a.m. off holes one and 10.
