Saint Mary's Tops Ducks, 81-76

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon men's basketball team lost 81-76 to Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon at McArthur Court in Eugene. The Ducks dropped to 4-4 overall with the loss, while the Gaels improved to 7-1 on the year.
Sophomore guard Malcolm Armstead scored 14 points for the Ducks, who led 34-33 at halftime. Freshman forward E.J. Singler added 12 points and sophomore center Michael Dunigan had 10 points in 15 minutes of action.
While Oregon shot better from the field - 50 percent to 47 percent - the Ducks made just 12-of-21 free throws (57.1 percent) while the Gaels were 20-of-24 from the line (83.3 percent).
Both teams grabbed 33 rebounds in the game. Fourteen of Oregon's rebounds were on the offensive glass. Oregon had six assists (to seven turnovers), while SMC had 10 assists and turned the ball over 10 times. The Ducks had a 5-1 edge in steals.
Omar Samhan scored 22 points, Matt Dellavedova added 21 for the Gaels. Clint Steindl also scored 14 for the Gaels (7-1), and Dellavedova had nine points in the final 3 minutes after Oregon had cut Saint Mary's nine-point lead to one.
Saint Mary's led 68-59 with 5:41 remaining before Oregon went on an 8-0 run to cut it to 68-67 with 3:22 left. But Dellavedova hit his third 3-pointer of the game to put Saint Mary's up 71-67 and the Gaels went 10 for 10 from the foul line in the final 1:25 to secure the victory.
Oregon (4-4) returns to action Dec. 16 when the Ducks host Mississippi Valley State. Tip-time is slated for 7 p.m. (PST) at McArthur Court in Eugene.
