WESTWOOD, Mass. -- The University of Oregon's record-equaling six-game winning streak was halted on a high school field in Massachusetts Thursday, as the University of Delaware squeaked by the Ducks, 6-5, in an afternoon, neutral site affair.
Oregon (7-3) led only once and converted just one of six free position shots in the second half in dropping its first contest in over a month. The Fightin' Blue Hens (4-4) evened their record on the season in taking the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Ilsa van den Berg led the Ducks with three goals, but needed nine shots to record her hat trick. Fellow senior Anna Poponyak made six saves and lowered her already solid goals against average to 9.25 despite the loss.
Courtney Aburn was the only Fightin' Blue Hen with multiple goals, scoring two. Goalie Jessica Cerveny was credited with 14 saves, including eight after halftime.
Delaware opened the scoring less than four minutes into the game on Aburn's first tally. Bina Barrett tied the score and van den Berg put the Ducks on top, 2-1, with 18:04 to play in the first half.
The Fightin' Blue Hens countered by scoring the next three goals before a free position shot from Anna Swicklik found the back of the cage with six seconds remaining in the halr, bringing UO within a goal at 4-3.
The two non-conference foes traded goals in the second half with van den Berg notching both Oregon strikes. Her goal with 2:39 to play was the game's last.
The Ducks will attempt to start a new streak on Saturday in Syracuse, N.Y. against LeMoyne, their final non-conference game of 2009.
