Husky Pitching Holds Off Ducks
03/05/09 | Baseball
SEATTLE - Washington starter Ben Guidos held the Ducks offense at bay on Wednesday, helping the Huskies sweep Oregon in the midweek series with a 10-2 victory at Husky Ballpark.
In his six innings on the mound, Guidos (1-1) saw just one batter over the minimum and struck out four in his first win of the season.
Washington, now 4-5 on the year, scored 10 runs on 17 hits, while the Huskies pitching staff held the Ducks (3-5) to two runs, both scored in the ninth.
The majority of Washington's scoring took place in the fifth and sixth innings. The Huskies put up four runs in the fifth as Washington batted around in the inning, and extended its lead to 5-0.
To begin the fifth, freshman starter Alex Keudell surrendered a double down the right field line to Julien Pollard and walked Andy Bethel before being relieved by freshman right-hander Scott McGough. Brian Gardner-Young loaded the bases with a bunt that fell between McGough and first baseman Darrell Hunter, before an infield single from Jake Rife scored Pollard. Pierce Rankin's slow rolling infield groundout down the first baseline accounted for two runs as Bethel and Gardner-Young crossed the plate. The fourth run of the inning was scored when an RBI single from Troy Scott scored Rife.
Washington continued its scoring in the sixth, putting three runs on the board off five hits as Pollard and Bethel hit back-to-back doubles to lead things off. Geoff Nichols came in for McGough, but couldn't prevent Rankin from hitting a two-run single up the middle as the Huskies took an 8-0 lead.
Washington wasted no time scoring its first run of the game as Scott led off the second with his second home run of the season, sending a shot over the wall in center field.
Scott finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs, while Rankin was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Oregon got its first base runners on in the top of the fourth when a bunt single put Curtis Raulinaitis on. The Sacramento native moved to second with his second stolen base of the year, and Guidos walked KC Serna to put two runners on for clean-up hitter Eddy Rodriguez. But Rodriguez sent a chopper to third that Rankin picked to turn a double play, tagging Raulinaitis and throwing out Rodriguez at first to end the inning.
Keudell (0-1) took the loss for Oregon, allowing three runs on five hits and two walks in four innings of work.
In the ninth a sacrifice fly from Raulinaitis scored Kenny Bartz, and an RBI single into right field from Serna scored Andrew Schmidt.
The Ducks return to PK Park this weekend to host a four-game series with the Santa Clara Broncos. Start time for Friday's game is set for 2 p.m.
