Yurkovich Waits, Breaks Meet and Stadium Records at Sea Ray Relays
04/11/09 | Track and Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- It came three hours and 30 minutes later than expected, but Rachel Yurkovich set a meet and stadium record with a throw of 190-0 to win the women's javelin Friday at the Sea Ray Relays at Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
Severe thunderstorms hit the Knoxville area at about 4:15 p.m. Eastern Time, suspending the meet for an extended period and pushing the javelin right up against midnight.
But the defending NCAA champion didn't let the delay phase her as she recorded a season best throw. Yurkovich, a senior from Newberg, Ore., missed her own Pac-10 and school record by an inch.
She broke Kim Kreiner's 2001 meet and stadium record of 186-7. Yurkovich also broke the track's collegiate record, 176-1, set by Christina Scherwin of Moravian in 2003. Coincidentally, Scherwin is now Oregon volunteer assistant coach and works with the Ducks' javelin throwers.
