No.1 UC Irvine Adds Four In Seventh To Top Ducks
04/21/09 | Baseball
IRVINE, Calif. - Top-ranked UC Irvine broke away from Oregon in the seventh inning, and the Ducks couldn't find a late answer in a 9-6 loss to the No. 1 Anteaters on Monday night at Anteater Ballpark.
Oregon hung tough with the nation's top-ranked team for the first six innings as the clubs continued to exchange the game's lead, but UC Irvine's (27-10) four-run effort in the seventh proved to put things out of reach for the Ducks (13-24).
UC Irvine broke the 5-5 tie in the bottom of the seventh when Casey Stevenson laced a two-run double past a diving Curtis Raulinaitis in left center, scoring Tommy Reyes and Ryan Fisher. Oregon reliever Zack Thornton issued Reyes the lead off walk, before Ryan Fleckenstein came on and surrendered a single to Fisher and walked Bell to load the bases for Stevenson's two-run double..
Freshman Chris Garrison came on in relief of Fleckenstein, and retired Ben Orloff and then made a highlight reel defensive play, fielding Eric Deragisch's bunt and making a diving tag on Dillon Bell trying to score from third. With two outs, Oregon looked to be out of the inning down only two runs when UC Irvine attempted a delayed steal with Deragisch at first and Stevenson taking off at third, but Danny Pulfer's return throw to Paul Eshleman was offline, allowing Stevenson to steal home. Francis Larson then singled to left to bring Deragisch home as UCI took a 9-5 advantage.
Raulinaitis, who was 3-for-5 on the day, spearheaded a late rally in the top of the ninth hitting a stand up triple that landed at the bottom of the wall in center field. He was brought home on Danny Pulfer's RBI.
Both team's pitching staffs struggled as Oregon tallied 11 hits on the day and UCI totaled 15. The Ducks got the leadoff batter on in five innings, with the run eventually scoring on four occasions. The Anteaters put the leadoff batter on six times, with the run scoring five times.
Shaeffer led the Anteaters with a 4-for-4 performance, while Stevenson was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Larson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Raulinaitis led Oregon again with three hits, including a double and triple as well as two runs scored. KC Serna and Josh Hogan had two hits apiece, while Jett Hart recorded a two-run double.
Matt Dufour (2-0) picked up the win for UC Irvine, pitching the final 2 and 1/3 innings and allowing just one run on one hit.
Thornton (0-1) took the loss for Oregon after pitching three innings of relief for starter Tyler Anderson. Thornton allowed two runs on five hits. In addition to Fleckenstein and Garrison, Scott McGough also appeared for Oregon, tossing the final inning and 1/3 and holding UCI scoreless.
UC Irvine wasted little taking a 2-0 lead over Oregon. In the first, Anderson put the leadoff hitter on with a hit by pitch, and loaded the bases surrendering back-to-back singles. Anderson then walked in a run with Larson at the plate, while DJ Crumlich grounded into a double, but Deragish was able to score.
Oregon cut UC Irvine's lead in half in the top of the second as the leadoff hitters reached when Serna singled and Andrew Schmidt was walked. Antony Kreitz executed the sacrifice to move both runners to second and third for Hogan. The second baseman came through with an RBI single to right, but Oregon left two runners stranded when starter Cory Hamilton retired Caleb Tommasini and Hart to center field.
The Ducks then tied the game in the top of the third when Raulinaitis led off the inning with a double to left center. He moved to third on a groundout from Pulfer and was brought home on Eshleman's sacrifice fly to right.
UC Irvine retook the lead, 3-2, by adding a run in the third after Shaeffer led off the inning with a hard hit double to the corner down the left field line. Shaeffer came around to score on Larson's RBI single to right.
In the fourth, Hamilton again put the leadoff hitter on by walking Schmidt. Kreitz laced a double off the wall to right center, putting runners on second and third. Two batters later, Hart put the Ducks ahead, 4-3, by hammering a two-run double over the reach of Anteater left fielder Sammy Donabedian.
In the bottom of the fourth UC Irvine tied the game after Stevenson was walked to lead things off. That spelled the end for Anderson, who then left the game and was relieved by Thornton. Stevenson eventually scored on Shaeffer's RBI infield chopper.
Oregon retook the lead , 5-4, getting the leadoff hitter on and around the bases again in the fifth. Hogan singled back up the middle and moved into scoring position on a balk. Hart placed a sacrifice bunt perfectly down the third baseline to get Hogan to third. Relief pitcher Matt Summers then bounced a wild pitch in front of the plate that got past Larson.
The Anteaters tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the sixth after Stevenson's leadoff double to left center ended up being a run for UCI when he scored two batters later on Deragisch's RBI single back up the middle.
Oregon and UCI will square off for their final game tomorrow at 2 p.m.
