Leake Tosses Complete Game Shutout In Win Over Ducks
05/16/09 | Baseball
TEMPE, Ariz. ? Arizona State's Mike Leake tossed the first complete game shutout of his career as the third-ranked Sun Devils defeated Oregon, 9-0, on Friday night at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium.
Leake (13-1), the reigning Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, held Oregon scoreless on three hits, while dealing 12 strikeouts in his nine innings on the mound. It was the right-hander's fifth complete game of the year and ninth of his collegiate career.
ASU (39-11, 17-5), currently the top team in the Pac-10 in search of its third straight conference title, racked up 11 hits and took 10 free bases by way of nine walks and one hit batter issued by the Oregon (14-35, 4-18) pitching staff.
Oregon starter Erik Stavert (5-5) took the loss, allowing six runs ? the most he has surrendered in a single outing this season ? on seven hits, four walks and one hit batter. The Ducks' ace lasted just 2 and 2/3 innings in his shortest start of the year, before freshman right-hander Chris Garrison came on in relief.
Garrison went the distance, tossing the final 5 and 1/3 innings of the game, surrendering three runs (two earned) on four hits and five walks.
ASU had three extra-base hits on the day, including a Jason Kipinis RBI triple to right center in the eighth. Drew Maggi led the Sun Devils' offense with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Raoul Torrez picked up two RBIs as well. Kole Calhoun was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Carlos Ramirez and Abe Ruiz also added two hits apiece.
The Sun Devils had a 6-0 advantage after just three innings.
In the first inning, ASU took advantage of Stavert issuing Maggi a leadoff walk. Maggi stole second and came home on Ramirez's single down the right field line.
The Sun Devils then hit Stavert for three runs in bottom of the second as ASU loaded the bases with one out. Stavert hit Raoul Torrez to walk in the first run, while Maggi drove a two-run double down the left field line to raise ASU's advantage to 4-0.
Leading 4-0, ASU added two runs in the third when Matt Newman and Zack MacPhee came through with an RBI single and RBI groundout, respectively.
A trio of freshman combined for Oregon's three hits as Antony Kreitz, Darrell Hunter and KC Serna each singled.
The Ducks and Sun Devils will play game two tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. Oregon fans can listen to all the action on KUGN 590 in Eugene or over the O-Zone on www.GoDucks.com.
Notes: Antony Kreitz extended his current hitting to six games with a single to left leading off the second...Oregon was shut out for the third time this season.
