OWINGS MILLS, Md. ? University of Oregon senior Cathryn Bristow opened action Tuesday tied for 60th overall with her 6-over 78 in the 28th annual NCAA Women's Golf Championships first round, hosted by Georgetown at the Caves Valley Golf Club.
In her NCAA Championships debut, she shot par scores on 11 holes (#1-5, 7, 8, 10-13, 18), and had bogeys on seven holes (#6, 7, 9, 14-17) on the par 72, 6,443-yard course.
"It was fun to get out there and see all the great players, teams, etc., and be a part of it all," Bristow said. "It's a beautiful but challenging course. I wasn't happy with the score, but it's a four-round tournament with a lot of golf left. The greens can be tricky, and the bunkers and rough challenge you and make you consider every shot. I had several opportunities for birdies but couldn't get them fall, so that gives me optimism for tomorrow."
Overall, only two of the 126 players shot under-par Tuesday ? North Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell and Denver's Stephanie Sherlock ? who were tied for the lead with their 2-under 70.
The quartet of Tennessee's Ginny Brown, Central Florida's Stephanie Connelly, Wake Forest's Nannette Hill and USC's Jennifer Song followed in a tie for third place with their even-par scores of 72.
"Both the team and individual scores reflected how deceptive this course is," Oregon interim coach Meredith Jones said. "There weren't many birdies. The greens are ever-changing in their slope, speed and layout so it's hard to get an overall feel and you have to take them one by one. It's a long course - not too narrow or with a lot of trees - but there are certainly obstacles to consider - the rough, bunkers and greens. Cathryn began on the back nine and had several bogeys early, but then was able to get her ball striking into rhythm and put herself in position for birdies, which unfortunately didn't seem to fall."
Team-wise Tuesday, No. 14 Denver led the field by two strokes (294), and was followed closely by No. 2 UCLA (second, 296) and No. 10 North Carolina (third, 299).
Other teams in the top 10 included No. 4 USC (fourth, 301), No. 1 Arizona State and No. 7 LSU (fifth-tie, 302), No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 12 Wake Forest (seventh-tie, 303) and No. 3 Virginia and No. 6 Alabama (ninth-tie, 305).
The remaining teams in the field included No. 9 Purdue (11th, 306), No. 17 Michigan State and No. 24 Tennessee (12th-tie, 307), No. 11 Duke (14th, 308), No. 20 Arizona (15th, 310), No. 22 New Mexico (16th, 311), No. 13 Pepperdine and No. 29 Tulane (17th-t, 312), No. 38 Texas and No. 27 TCU (19th-t, 314), No. 44 UT Chattanooga and No. 15 Georgia (21st-t, 316), No. 18 UC Irvine (23rd, 320) and No. 26 Ohio State (24th, 323).

Bristow was one of two individuals that advanced from the West Regional 10 days ago (with Alice Davis of UC Davis who was tied for 12th Tuesday with a 2-over 74). Results for the other four qualifiers follows: UCF's Connelly (third-tie, 72), Louisville's Cindy LaCrosse (38rd-t, 76), Wake Forest's Marina Alex (79th-t, 79) and Oklahoma's Kendall Dye (107th-t, 82).
The Huapai, New Zealand native is the third Duck to qualify individually for the collegiate finale, and six Oregon squads have also qualified in school history.
Coming into Tuesday's round, Bristow had led UO in 11 of 27 rounds this season, and 45 altogether in 114 career rounds. Tournament-wise, she had paced UO in 17 of her 40 collegiate events. This season she owns three of UO's under-par rounds (4-under 68, 3-under 69, 1-under 70), and four more rounds of par, and three of those seven rounds of par or better have come in the West Regional (69 (3-), 72 (par)) or Pac-10 Championships (70 (1-)) the past month. This week, she was ranked 64th nationally by Golf Stat and also stood 77th in the Golfweek rankings last week.
