OSU Takes Final Game Of Civil War Series
05/21/09 | Baseball
KEIZER, Ore. ? Oregon State ended the season series against Oregon with a 14-4 victory at the Civil War I-5 Iris Festival Classic at Volcanoes Stadium on Wednesday night.
Oregon State (33-16) totaled 14 runs on 15 hits and two Duck errors. The Beavers went through five Oregon pitchers, but it was freshman Chris Garrison (0-3) who took the loss for the Ducks, surrendering four runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks.
OSU starter Greg Peavey (4-3) picked up the win, holding the Ducks (14-39) to four runs on six hits in his 6 and 1/3 innings on the mound.
Joey Wong led Oregon State with a 4-for-6 performance, including a three-run double. Aldaberto Santos was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs for the Beavers, while Stefen Romero was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
Oregon took the game's first lead in the bottom of the second after Peavey surrendered back-to-back singles to Danny Pulfer and Paul Eshlemen. With Pulfer sitting 90 feet away from scoring the game's first run at third, Sean Potkay produced an RBI groundout to bring Pulfer home.
OSU tied the game, 1-1, in the top of third after three consecutive singleas resulted in Michael Miller scoring on Santos' RBI single to left.
The Beavers broke the game open batting around in the fourth, and scoring five runs on four hits. Garrison loaded the bases by way of two walks sandwiched between an error, before the righty was relieved by left-hander Bennett Whitmore, who recorded the first out of the inning.
But Wong then tagged Whitmore for a bases-clearing, three-run double to the gap in left center. Santos then singled home Wong, and Jared Norris singled home Santos as the Beavers took a 6-1 lead.
The Ducks scored just one run in the bottom of the fourth when back-to-back hits and a hit batter loaded the bases with no outs. Peavey struck out three consecutive batters, but before the third out, a wild pitch allowed KC Serna to score for Oregon.
In the sixth, OSU batted around again, scoring eight runs on five hits and one error.
The Ducks added two runs in the seventh when Kenny Bartz laced a two-run triple down the right field line off OSU reliever Kyle Foster to score Potkay and Dylan Gavin. It was the second straight game Bartz has tripled.
In addition to Whitmore, Madison Boer, Blake Williams and Zack Thornton all appeared on the mound. Thornton pitched 3 and 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, striking out two to finish the game for Oregon.
The Ducks return to the field in less than two days time, hosting Arizona in the final series of the season. Friday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m. from PK Park.
