CORVALLIS, Ore. - In Tuesday's Giustina Memorial Classic final round, junior Kendra Little and the No. 22 University of Oregon women's golf team ran away with individual and team victories at the Oregon State-hosted event.
The Duck women carded the second-lowest score of the tourney Tuesday (298) en route to a 25-stroke victory (296-302-298-896) over Washington State (second, 309-312-300-921). Wyoming followed in third place (304-313-309-926), just ahead of Oregon State (fourth, 305-315-309-929) in the 10-team field.
On the par-72, 6,282-yard Trysting Tree Golf Course, Little again shot the best score of the round en route to a nine-stroke win (73-69-72-214) over Wyoming's Juanita Rico (second, 72-75-76-223).
"Kendra continues to prove herself as one of the nation's top players," Quiazon said, "and yet she has room to continue to grow, as does the team. We won, but all of our players felt like they left shots out there. Regardless, they made it work, and to win by 25 shots is pretty special."
Little's win was her second straight this season and also the fourth of her career after she won last year's Giustina event (69-73-73-215) and the 2008 Duck Invitational (70-73-72-214).
After two tournaments this young season, the Eugene native Little has now shot rounds of 73 or better in all six of her rounds. Five of those scores were under-par, including a pair of 5-under 68's that ranked second-best in school history and a 2-under 71 that led to a Duck tournament record at New Mexico's Branch Law Firm / Dick McGuire Invitational two weekends ago (71-68-68-207).
Career-wise, Little has now led UO in 33 of her 72 career rounds and has 17 under-par rounds in her career. She has also paced UO in 11 of her 24 tournaments for the Ducks.
Among other UO results, freshman Cheyenne Hickle improved a place Tuesday and tied for third place (73-78-73-224) in her second collegiate tourney, and was joined by three other Ducks in the top 15 overall - senior Kate Hildahl (14th-tie, 79-76-78-233), sophomore Ashley Edwards (14th-tie, 71-81-81-233) and junior Erica Omild (14th-tie, 79-79-75-233).
"It felt like a home event today," Quiazon said, "because we had so much support from our families, friends and the men's team. I liked how various players stepped up to make contributions at different times. Cheyenne has made an immediate impact scoring-wise and with her attitude. She's a grinder who doesn't get too down on herself and hits it about as far as Kendra, which is inspiring for a freshman. Ashley got us a good score early, Kate was steady throughout, and Erica put a great score on the board today in trying conditions."
UO's victory Tuesday was its highest in six trips to OSU-hosted events and also marked its first overall victory since the Ducks won the 2008 Oregon Duck Invitational at the Eugene Country Club (297-309-294-900) over UC Davis by four strokes.
On the men's side, No. 22 Oregon finished third (280-289-288-857) on the par 72, 7,030-yard course behind Oregon State (first, 282-283-279-844) and Washington State (third, 277-284-292-853). Individually, two Duck men ranked top 10 - John Paton (second, 69-70-69-208) and Eugene Wong (sixth-tie, 70-71-71-212) - while first-day leader Trent Sanders of WSU won by one stroke (68-68-71-207) over UO's Paton.
Final results and more tourney information are available at Oregon State University's www.OSUbeavers.com website.
Looking ahead, UO next travels to the Edean Ihlandfeldt Invitational, hosted Monday-Wednesday, October 5-7 by the University of Washington at the Sahalee Country Club.
"We're looking forward to playing a tough field next week," Quiazon said. "It's always a strong field with a lot of Pac-10 teams. Our players will be hungry to score well there. This week, everyone came in with high expectations scoring-wise since they were really familiar with Trysting Tree, but the conditions weren't the same, and even the course pro said the greens were firmer than ever."
