Ducks Sink Pilots, 6-1

EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon women's tennis team emerged victorious on Friday night, defeating Portland 6-1 inside the Student Tennis Center.
The Ducks swept the doubles portion with big wins by Pavlina Smatova and Trudie du Toit (8-1) at No. 1 doubles and Emmanuelle Cor and Patricia Skowronski (8-2) at No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, sisters Sabine Fuchs (UO) and Stephanie Fuchs (Portland) battled in a close match but Sabine and partner Julia Metzger pulled out an 8-5 win.
In singles play the Ducks had nearly perfect performances from Julia Metzger at No. 2 singles (6-0, 6-1) and Sabine Fuchs (6-0, 6-1). Metzger has now won four straight matches, including a pair of victories over top-100 ranked opponents. Pavlina Smatova won her match at No. 1 singles after opponent Lacey Pflibsen retired in the second set with Smatova leading 2-0.
The Ducks will be back in action on Sunday, with a pair of matches. Oregon will face Eastern Washington at 10 a.m. and Portland State at 5 p.m. Both with be played at the Student Tennis Center behind Mac Court.
