Oregon Tops UCLA in Overtime, 71-66

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Oregon men's basketball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 71-66 overtime win over UCLA on Thursday night at McArthur Court in Eugene. The Ducks improved to 11-9 overall and 3-5 in Pac-10 Conference play, while the Bruins dropped to 9-11 on the season and 4-4 in league action.
Senior guard Tajuan Porter and sophomore guard Matt Humphrey both tallied 15 points to lead all Oregon scorers. Sophomore forward Jeremy Jacob chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds in 37 minutes of playing time.
Porter went 4-of-12 from the field (4-of-8 on 3-pointers) while grabbing a season-best six rebounds in playing a team-high 42 minutes. Humphrey, playing in just his second game back since returning from a knee injury, recorded all 15 of his points in the second half. He went 5-of-8 from the floor including 3-of-5 on 3-pointers in playing 21 minutes off the bench.
Other Oregon leaders included sophomore guard Malcolm Armstead who tallied a career-high 12 assists to just two turnovers, while also matching a career-best with four steals. Armstead finished with six rebounds which tied him for the team high with Porter and sophomore center Michael Dunigan.
The Ducks shot 42.9 percent from the field (24-of-56) and 42.1 percent on 3-pointers (8-of-19). UO shot 21 free throws in the game, making 15 of them for 71.4 percent. UCLA was limited to just 6-of-11 from the charity stripe (54.5 percent), while hitting only 39.1 percent of its field goals (25-of-64). Thirty-three of the Bruins shot attempts were from behind the 3-point arc, making just 10 of those shots for 30.3 percent.
UCLA had four players score in double figures, led by Nikola Dragovic who tallied 19 points to go with 10 rebounds. Tyler Honeycutt also had a double double with 13 points and 10 boards, while Michael Roll and Reeves Nelson added 16 and 11 points respectively.
Jacob, making just his third career start, helped Oregon out to an early lead with a baseline jumper at the 19-minute mark. The Ducks continued their strong start when Armstead hit a 3-pointer from the corner to put UO up 6-3 with 17:20 on the clock.
Oregon went up 10-6 on an interior basket by Dunigan, but UCLA countered with a trio of 3-pointers by Dragovic over a four-minute span to take a 15-11 advantage. Three made free throws from Porter with 6:50 left in the half ended the Bruins 18-3 run, putting the score at 24-16.
UCLA built its lead up to 13 points, 29-16, after another 5-0 run over the next two minutes. The Ducks came back with a 12-0 run to narrow the lead to 29-28, capped by a pair of long 3-pointers by Porter which ignited the crowd.
Oregon trailed by three points at the half, 31-28. The Ducks shot 40.9 percent from the field (9-of-22) over the first 20 minutes of the game, hitting 3-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc for 37.5 percent. Porter led the Ducks with nine points at the break, while Dunigan added eight points and four boards.
UCLA shot 40.7 percent (11-of-27), while hitting 35.7 percent of its 3-pointers (5-of-14). The Bruins were led offensively by Dragovic who had 11 points, going 3-of-7 on 3-pointers during the first stanza.
The Ducks fell behind four points at the 18-minute mark on a 3-pointer by Dragovic, but a lay-up by Jacob, followed by another 3-pointer by Porter, gave Oregon a 35-34 edge. The Ducks' largest lead of the half was seven points, a 47-40 advantage after a 3-pointer by Humphrey with 12:10 on the clock.
Porter drove baseline and dished off to an open Wilson for an easy two, giving the Ducks a 49-43 lead with eight minutes remaining.
A dunk by Honeycutt put UCLA to within two points at 52-50 with 3:59 on the clock. Roll sent the game into overtime with a score of 55-55 after hitting a 3-pointer with 11 seconds in regulation.
Humphrey hit back-to-back 3-pointers in overtime to give Oregon a 61-57 advantage with 1:31 in the game. He finished with eight points in the extra period, with Humphrey and freshman forward E.J. Singler hitting clutch free throws down the stretch.
Oregon (11-9, 3-5 Pac-10) will return to the hardwood Saturday at 3 p.m. with a conference match-up against USC. The Trojans lost 51-45 at Oregon State on Thursday night.
POSTGAME NOTEBOOK
SHOOTING SUPERIORS: Oregon out-shot UCLA 42.9% to 39.1% on field goals in the game. The last time Oregon had out-shot an opponent was the Washington and Washington State wins to begin Pac-10 play.
FREE THROW ADVANTAGE: Oregon took five more free throws than the Bruins (10-5) and made three more (7-4). It was the first time in Pac-10 play this season that the Ducks went to the line and/or made more free throws than their opponents. Even in wins over the Huskies and Cougars, the Washington schools combined to shoot 56-of-77 from the free throw line while the Ducks made 24-of-37 from the charity stripe.
HUMPHREY IS BACK: Matt Humphrey played in just his seventh game of the season after missing a 12-game stretch following a knee injury. His previous game-high in 2009 was seven points against Montana. In fact, Humphrey's 15 points was just one point shy of matching his total points this season. He did match his FGs on the year, dropping 5-of-8 shots against the Bruins after hitting 5-of-18 shots previously in 2009.
BENCH ON FIRE: Prior to overtime, the Oregon bench had scored just eight points (Humphrey 7, Crittle 1) but that changed in a big way with Humphrey and EJ Singler combining to score all 16 of Oregon's OT points (Humphrey 8, Singler 8). Humphrey ended up with 15 points, tying Porter for game-high.
SINGLER'S STREAK SNAPPED: Freshman forward EJ Singler had started 10 straight games before staying on the bench to begin the UCLA game. Only Malcolm Armstead (12) and Michael Dunigan (13) have had longer starting streaks.
FIRST TIME LINEUP: Head coach Ernie Kent started Malcolm Armstead, Tajuan Porter, Jamil Wilson, Jeremy Jacob and Michael Dunigan against UCLA. It was the first time this season the 13th year coach had used that lineup and just Jacob's third start of the year. The Ducks are now 2-1 in games that Jacob starts.
