Explosive Second Half Propels Ducks to Exhibition Win
11/06/10 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE – Joevan Catron made a splash in his return to the court to help lead the Oregon men's basketball team to an 80-53 win over Northwest Christian at McArthur Court on Friday night.
Catron finished 5-for-7 from the floor and tied teammate E.J. Singler with a game-high 16 points in the victory. The senior also drained five of his six free throws.
The Ducks stormed out of the gates by scoring the first seven points, a run that Teondre Williams put the exclamation point on with a thunderous dunk.
After weathering the early UO storm, NCU responded with a 13-2 run of its own to take the lead at 13-9. The rest of the first half went back and forth, but UO held a 38-34 lead thanks in large part to Catron's 10 points and a 21-10 advantage on the glass.
The Green and Yellow blew the game open at the start of the second half with a 12-2 spurt that made it a 50-36 ballgame. The Beacons recovered to close the gap to nine at 50-41 with 14:27 remaining, the Ducks' defense allowed only two points over the next eight minutes as UO built a lead as large as 28 to cruise the rest of the way.
Four UO players scored in double figures, led by Catron and Singler's 16. Malcolm Armstead chipped in with 13 points and dished out five assists while Garrett Sim tallied 11 points of his own. Singler and Tyrone Nared paced the Ducks on the glass with seven rebounds.
Oregon shot 41.9 percent from the floor and held Northwest Christian to 39 percent shooting, including a .267 clip in the second half. The Ducks dominated the boards, outrebounding the Beacons 49-26.
UO opens up its regular season on Nov. 12 when it hosts North Dakota State in the BTI Invitational.
