TEMPE, Ariz. - A bulls-eye throw home by Texas Tech leftfielder Stephanie Drewry cut down the potential tying run at the plate with two outs in the seventh to seal a 4-3 decision over the University of Oregon softball team (2-2) Saturday afternoon in Kajikawa Classic Day 2 action.
The Red Raiders (3-1) retook a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning on a three-run homer by Raven Richardson, but UO answered with a run of its own on a single by freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas – the same play that featured the aforementioned game-ending putout.
Junior designated player Kaitlin Vitek and senior pinch hitter Carlyn Re started the inning with a pair of singles, and the former player made her first start of the season.
On the mound for UO, freshman starting pitcher Jessica Moore (1-1) pitched the first 6.1 innings, struck out five, walked one and three of her four runs allowed were earned. Junior Brittany Rumfelt pitched the final 0.2 innings, notched a strikeout and issued no walks.
In the first inning, the lead-off hitter Pappas launched a towering homer to right field to open the game on a 1-2 pitch - the second round-tripper of her career after a solo shot in the day's first game vs. San Diego State.
Oregon added another run the same inning after a walk by senior centerfielder Neena Bryant who advanced on a stolen base and a passed ball, and scored on an RBI ground-out by sophomore third baseman Kelsey Chambers.
Pappas ended the evening with a career-best 3-for-4 effort with one run and two RBI. Chambers (2-for-4) also stroked multiple hits, thanks to her double down the line to open the fourth inning.
Texas Tech scored its first run of the game in the first inning on a delayed double steal with the run scored by Leah Legler.
For the Red Raiders, Legler was one of four batters that hit safely and also scored a run each. Starting pitcher Ashly Jacobs pitched the first 5.1 innings, struck out four, walked two and one of her two runs allowed was earned. Hillary Phillips pitched the final 12 innings, struck out one, and her one run allowed was earned.
Earlier in the afternoon, UO experienced another heartbreaking 4-3 loss, as San Diego State scored three runs on an eighth-inning double to sully an otherwise strong pitching performance by sophomore starter Samantha Skillingstad who struck out seven batters.
Against the Aztecs, Oregon scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to go up 3-1 on a two-run double by freshman Allie Burger. The Ducks' other run came on Pappas' lined home run to center field in the sixth inning, also on a 1-2 pitch.
Looking ahead, UO returns to face Western Michigan and Cal State Northridge at 11:15 and 1:30 pm. Mountain Time (10:15 and 12:30 pm PT) Sunday in Kajikawa Classic third and final day action.
