LAS VEGAS – The University of Oregon softball team (5-3) posted its second shutout of the season with a 6-0 win over returning NCAA qualifier Cal State Fullerton (2-4) in second-day action Friday in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
At Stephanie Lynn Craig Field in nearby Henderson, Nev., freshman starter Jessica Moore (2-1) struck out five, walked one, and allowed only one hit in her second complete game of the season.
UO went up 1-0 in the second inning when freshman Allie Burger doubled down the left field line. Burger's team-leading second double of the year scored Moore who had reached on a fielder's choice after sophomore second baseman Kelsey Chambers opened the inning with a single to left field.
The Ducks extended their lead in the fourth inning when Duck freshman Samantha Pappas stroked a three-run double to centerfield. Senior designated player Blair Williamson had singled to start the inning, and was followed by a sacrifice bunt, a pair of fielder's choices and an infield single up the middle off the pitcher by senior centerfielder Neena Bryant.
In her first start of the season, Williamson added two more runs in the seventh inning on her first homer of the season, a right field shot off a 2-2 pitch, and knocked in Moore who had walked with two outs.
For the game, Pappas (2-for4, 3 RBI) and Williamson (2-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBI) led the team in hits, and others that hit safely included lead-off hitter and junior third baseman Cortney Kivett (1-for-5, 1 run), Bryant (1-for-3, 1 run), junior first baseman Monique Fuiava (1-for-4), Chambers (1-for-3, 1 walk) and Burger (1-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI).
For Fullerton, starting pitcher Aly Fascetti (0-1) worked the first four innings, struck out two, walked one, and all three runs she allowed on Pappas' double were earned. Ari Cervantes pitched the final three innings, struck out one, walked three, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
At the plate for the Titans, the only players to hit safely were third baseman Sheila Holguin (1-for-2) and designated player Kadie Baldwin (1-for-3).
Friday's win also avenged a 6-5 loss last season in the same tournament when Fullerton scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win.
Moore's blanking followed the lead of teammates Brittany Rumfelt and Samantha Skillingstad who blanked Western Michigan 4-0 last weekend in Tempe. Moore lowered her ERA to 1.59 Friday, and leads the team in strikeouts (26) and starts (4).
Williamson's homer was the fourth of her career after she hit three last year in games vs. Oregon State and NCAA qualifiers Arizona and Portland State. Pappas' double was her first of the season, and she leads the team in hits (10) and RBI (7). Burger's RBI was her fourth of the campaign and her seventh hit.
Looking ahead, UO has one more game Friday vs. Long Beach State (3-2) at 3:45 p.m. at the same field. On Saturday, Oregon faces Indiana (0-2) at 11:15 a.m., then on Sunday takes on Illinois-Chicago (3-2) at 9 a.m. and San Diego (3-1) at 11:15 a.m.
