LAS VEGAS - The offense exploded Saturday night for the University of Oregon softball team (6-3) and boosted it to a 9-1 win over Long Beach State (3-3) and its second win Friday in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
After a game-opening homer by Long Beach State second baseman Nalani St. Germain, UO answered with a season high in runs, thanks to two runs in the first inning, one in the third, two more in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth inning.
En route to a 3-for-4, three-RBI day, freshman designated player Samantha Pappas knocked in UO's first run in the opening inning on a single. Junior first baseman Monique Fuiava followed with a double to score Pappas for the eventual game-winning RBI.
In her next at-bat in the third inning, Fuiava again doubled, this time down the right field line. The hometown Las Vegas native later came around to score when sophomore infielder Kelsey Chambers followed with a double.
In the fourth inning, junior starting pitcher Brittany Rumfelt helped her own cause with her first career home run, a towering blast to right center field that scored senior right fielder Blair Williamson who had walked to open the inning.
The Las Flores, Calif., native Pappas then added her team-leading fourth home run of the season – another monster shot to right center field to open the fifth. Fuiava followed with a walk, and after a fielder's choice by Chambers, freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard doubled to left center to score the latter baserunner.
In the game-deciding sixth, freshman Allie Burger joined the offensive antics and lined an 0-2 pitch past the third baseman and down the left field line for a double. Burger later crossed home plate on senior centerfielder Neena Bryant's single to left field, and Pappas added a double to center that scored Bryant. Two batters later, Chambers ended the game with an RBI single to left field that met the NCAA eight-run rule.
Altogether, two other Ducks besides Pappas banged out multiple hits – Fuiava (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) and Chambers (2-for-4, 2 RBI).
Over the course of the contest, the Ducks received a hit from every other position in the batting order courtesy of junior third baseman Cortney Kivett (1-for-3, 1 run), Bryant (1-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Howard (1-for-2, 1 walk), Williamson (1-for-3, 1 run), Rumfelt (1-for-3, 1 run, 2 RBI) and Burger (1-for-3, 1 run).
On the mound, Rumfelt (3-0) got her first win of the weekend and struck out three, walked none, and her run allowed was earned in her five-inning start. Freshman Jessica Moore came in and pitched the sixth inning and gave up one hit, and had no strikeouts or walks.
For Long Beach State, starting pitcher Taylor Petty (1-2) worked the opening four innings, struck out two, walked two, and five of her six runs allowed were earned. Reliever Bridgette Pagano pitched the final 1.2 innings, struck out two, walked none, and two of her three runs allowed were earned.
At the plate, four 49ers hit safely – St. Germain (1-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI), Brandy Reyes (2-for-3), Liz Javier (1-for-2) and Bree Stephan (1-for-2).
Earlier in the day, Moore shutout returning NCAA tournament qualifier Cal State Fullerton, 6-0, and allowed only two hits in her second complete game of the season. At the plate, Burger had an RBI double in the first inning, Pappas stroked a three-run double in the fourth, and Williamson hit her first homer of the year, a two-run shot, in the seventh inning
Looking ahead, UO faces Indiana (1-3) at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, then on Sunday takes on Illinois-Chicago (3-2) at 9 a.m. and San Diego (3-1) at 11:15 a.m.
