PALM SPRINGS - En route to its fifth straight win, the University of Oregon softball team (11-4) came back for a 4-3 victory over Hawai'i (9-5) Friday in the second day of the Cathedral City Classic.
Fresh off a win over then-11 Stanford last week, Hawai'i got ahead 2-0 in the first inning after a double and walk were followed by three straight singles - all with no outs.
At that point, freshman pitcher Jessica Moore (5-1) had already come in and replaced sophomore starter Samantha Skillingstad. Oregon registered its first out when senior centerfielder Neena Bryant threw out the opening batter at home plate on the first of those aforementioned singles. After the Wahine scored its second run, Moore followed with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.
Moore followed with a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the second and third in which she logged two strikeouts each stanza.
Another runner reached base in the fourth, and two more reached in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, but Moore remained composed, even in the seventh when a double was followed by an RBI single that made it 4-3, and the tying and go-ahead runs were on second and third base.
However, the Sutter, Calif., native ended the inning with a two-out, 3-2 strikeout when the third base umpire rung up the hitter on an attempted check swing - her 10th 'K' of the game that also tied the 11th-best total in school history.
Altogether, Moore ended just shy of her season strikeout high (12) and fanned 10 or more for the third time this season. In her seven innings she walked one, allowed eight hits, and only one of her two runs allowed were earned.
At the plate, sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers went 3-for-3, and others that hit safely included senior designated player Blair Williamson (2-for-3), Bryant (1-for-2, 1 run, 1 RBI), freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas (1-for-3, 1 run), junior third baseman Cortney Kivett (2-for-3, 1 run) and freshman left fielder Allie Burger (2-for-3, 1 RBI).
The Ducks scored their first run in the second inning when Kelsey Chambers reached on a hit, advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard and single by Cortney Kivett, respectively, then scored on an infield single by Burger.
UO tied the game in the third inning when Chambers' single to right field knocked in Bryant who had singled to open the inning.
In the fourth inning, Cortney Kivett, Burger and Williamson loaded the bases with one out after all three reached via bunt singles, and Bryant knocked in the run with her sacrifice fly to center field.
Oregon's final run came in the sixth after Pappas doubled down the right field line, and scored on another RBI single by Kelsey Chambers.
Hawai'i starting pitcher Kaia Parnaby (5-2), struck out three in the complete game, walked none, gave up 11 hits, and all four of her runs allowed were earned. At the plate for UH, seven players hit safely, and two had multiple hits - Amanda Tauali'i (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and Jenna Rodriguez (2-for-4).
Looking ahead, UO plays Long Island immediately after at approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon.
