SAN DIEGO - The University of Oregon softball team (13-4) opened the San Diego Classic with a 1-0 win over Long Beach State (5-11) Friday afternoon at the San Diego Softball Stadium.
Sophomore starter Samantha Skillingstad nearly logged her first shutout of the season and struck out eight, walked five and allowed four hits in her 6.2 innings. Junior Brittany Rumfelt got the final out on a ground-out to earn her first save of the season and second of her career.
The Ducks scored their run in the fifth, when with one out, junior catcher Ashley Kivett doubled to left center field in her second at-bat the last three weeks. Junior third baseman Cortney Kivett followed with a bunt single, and after a walk to senior designated player Blair Williamson, freshman left fielder Allie Burger knocked in the game-winner with a single.
UO's other hit in the game came in the fourth inning when freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas poked a single up the middle with one out. She stole second base, but was stranded after a foul-out and ground-out.
LBSU left runners on in every inning except one, including two in the second and third innings.
Skillingstad avoided trouble in the second after walking two batters with one out, she followed with two strikeouts. In the third inning, an opening single down the line was erased when the next batter's bunt was caught by Skillingstad, and she turned and got the double play at first base on a failure to tag by the runner. The next two batters singled but Skillingstad again answered with a strikeout to end the inning.
For the game, 49er starter Brooker Turner struck out eight, gave up one hit, walked one and her run allowed was earned. Three of the first four batters in the lineup hit safely - Nalani St. Germain (1-for-4), Brandy Reyes (2-for-2, 1 walk) and Liz Javier (1-for-3).
Looking ahead, UO faces returning NCAA qualifier San Diego State at 7 p.m. Friday night.
