EUGENE, Ore. - The University of Oregon softball team (15-5) opened its home slate with a 9-0 win over Boise State (3-13) Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader.
Oregon played its third, NCAA run rule-shortened game of the season and rapped out 12 hits, including three courtesy of sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers (3-for-3, 1 run, 3 RBI) who hit her third homer of the season in the fourth inning.
On the mound, freshman Jessica Moore (7-2) recorded her sixth complete game of the season, allowed only one hit and stuck out nine- her seventh game of '10 in which she has fanned at least nine.
The offensive outburst for the Ducks started with freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard's first at-bat at Howe Field, as the Riverside, Calif., native blasted a 3-2 pitch deep over the left field wall in the second inning for her fourth homer of the season.
Overall, Howard went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and run scored. Junior first baseman Monique Fuiava chipped in with her third home run of '10 that scored two runs in the third, and the Las Vegas product went 2-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
Senior pinch-hitter Carlyn Re add a two-run single in the third inning - her fifth hit or walk in her last eight pinch-hit at-bats.
Boise State collected its only hit in the third inning when its leadoff hitter, Jessi Hanna, smashed a grounder to the right of Kaylan Howard who couldn't quite gather the ball on the short hop as it deflected into center field.
On the mound for the Broncos, stater and Eugene native Aubray Zell (0-4) struck out two, walked none, and allowed eight hits and three of her six runs allowed were earned in her three innings of work. Ashley Collier pitched the final inning, struck out one, walked one, gave up four hits, and all three runs yielded were earned.
Looking ahead, the Ducks take on North Dakota in the second game of the double header at 4 pm at Howe Field.
