EUGENE - Senior designated player Carlyn Re's two homers in Saturday's afternoon finale propelled the University of Oregon softball team (16-5) to a 7-1 win over North Dakota (3-11) in home opener action at Howe Field.
The Tualatin, Ore., native Re (2-for-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI) crushed her first-ever homers at home in the second and sixth innings - solo shots high over the right center and right field walls - to give her two on the season and three in her career.
"We were excited to be back at home and came out ready to play," Re said. "I wasn't expecting anything like that, and tried to be ready to help the team however I could. Our pitchers did a great job, and gave our whole team confidence."
Re's pair of homers tied her for third-most in a game in school history with a host of players, including junior first baseman Monique Fuiava who accomplished the feat as a freshman vs. Cal Poly and as a sophomore vs. Cal State Fullerton.
Freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas went 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI for her ninth-multi-hit game of the season - most on the squad.
Five other Ducks finished with one hit - senior left fielder Blair Williamson (1-for-2, 2 RBI, 1 walk), sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers (1-for-3, 2 RBI), sophomore third baseman Cortney Kivett (1-for-2, 1 run), sophomore pinch-hitter Lindsey Chambers (1-for-1, 1 run) and junior pinch-hitter Brittany Rumfelt (1-for-1).
In her eighth start of the season, sophomore Samantha Skillingstad (4-3) struck out a career high 11 batters in her six innings, walked none, and her only run allowed was earned. Her 'K' tally Saturday tied for eighth-most in school history, and she already stood tied for 12th with her pair of 10-strikeout performances each of the last two seasons.
Sophomore reliever Mikayla Endicott worked the seventh inning, struck out three, walked none, and allowed no hits or runs.
UND's only run of the game came on a two-out, first-inning solo homer by Toni Schutte off of Skillingstad. In the game's remainder, three other players hit safely in three different innings as Skillingstad struck out three hitters in the second and fifth innings and two in the first and fourth innings.
Earlier in the day, UO beat Boise State, 9-0, in five innings. Freshman Jessica Moore threw the third one-hit complete game of her career and struck out nine and walked four. Sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers (3-for-3, 3 RBI) hit her third homer of the season; freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard (2-for-3, 1 RBI) crushed her fourth homer of '10; and Fuiava (2-for-3, 2 RBI) added her third round-tripper."Sam pitched really well," Oregon head coach Mike White said. "She made a mistake early, but came back and had good location and pitched well. It was good to see our bats come alive, including the pinch-hits we got from Lindsey Chambers and Brittany Rumfelt. Our defense played well with Kelsey making several tough plays at short, and as a whole today we didn't make an error. We had a great crowd, and it was good to be back at home and see everybody contribute."
Looking ahead, Boise State and North Dakota play at Howe Field Sunday morning at 9 a.m., and UO then takes on North Dakota at 11 a.m. and Boise State at 1 p.m.
Fans should also remember to move their clocks forward one hour late Saturday night in lieu of daylight savings time.
