The Ducks shot a 295 Monday and were tied for ninth place with No. 21 New Mexico in the 18-team field. UO's seven-over score tied its second-lowest in 17 rounds this season, and was only three strokes shy of its best (292) from the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational last November in Hawai'i.
Overall in the first round, No. 8 Arizona owned a three-stroke advantage on the field with its five-under total of 283, and other teams in the top five included No. 1 UCLA (second-tie, 286), No. 5 USC (second-tie, 286), No. 9 Pepperdine (fourth, 288) and No. 34 Washington (fifth, 292).
Other teams ahead of the Ducks included No. 13 Stanford (sixth, 292), No. 42 UNLV (seventh-tie, 294) and No. 1 Arizona State (seventh-tie, 294).
In the remaining team standings, Oregon held a comfortable advantage over No. 54 San Diego State (11th, 302), Long Beach State (12th, 308), Oregon State (13th, 310), No. 44 San Francisco (14th, 312), Cal State Northridge (15th, 317), New Mexico State (16th, 320), BYU (17th, 323) and Washington State (18th, 330).
On the individual front, Hickle led UO for the second time in her 14th collegiate round, and was tied for seventh (70) overall on the par 72, 6,282-yard Robinson Ranch Golf Club course. The Gilbert, Ariz., native enjoyed four birdies on the par-5 fourth and 13th holes and par-4 eighth and 16th holes, shot par on 13 holes (#1-3, 5, 7, 9, 10-12, 14-15, 17-18), and had a double-bogey on the sixth hole.
Hickle's previous collegiate best was her one-over 73 in the Giustina Memorial Classic in September. Her score Monday was also the team's fourth-lowest total of the season behind Kendra Little's pair of five-under 68's in the Branch law Firm Invitational and the latter player's 3-under in the Giustina event second round.
Two other Oregon players shot two-over 74's Monday – junior Kendra Little and sophomore Ashley Edwards (31st-tie, 74) – and the duo carded three and two birdies, respectively. Senior Kate Hildahl rounded out UO's scoring (49th-t, 77), and the Ducks' other entrant was Felicia Eastick (74th-t, 81).
