PORTLAND, Ore. - The No. 25 University of Oregon softball team (19-5) topped returning PCSC Conference champion Portland State (10-16) by a 3-2 score in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.
In the season opener at PSU's Erv Lind Stadium, UO scored a run in the first inning on an RBI single by junior first baseman Monique Fuiava that scored senior designated player Blair Williamson, who had walked to open the game.
UO tacked on its final two runs in the second inning. With one out, junior catcher Ashley Kivett socked a double to left field, and was followed by a bunt single by twin sister and junior third baseman Cortney Kivett. The next batter, freshman left fielder Allie Burger, hit a grounder to the first baseman who made an error, and both Kivetts came around to score.
At the plate for UO, sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers (2-for-3) banged out multiple hits for the seventh time this season - second-most on the team behind freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas (10). Other Ducks that hit safely included Pappas (1-for-3), Fuiava (1-for-3), Ashley Kivett (1-for-1) and Cortney Kivett (1-for-3).
On the mound for UO, freshman Jessica Moore (8-2) struck out 10, walked one, allowed four hits, and both runs allowed were unearned in her seventh complete game of the season. Her 'K' total was her fifth of +10 or more this year, was the 12th-best total in school history, and was only two shy of her career high (12) that ranks third-best in school history.
For the returning NCAA qualifiers, Viking starter and freshman Anna Bertrand (7-5) struck out nine, walked three, and two of her three runs allowed in the complete game were earned. Three PSU batters hit safely - Arielle Wiser (1-for-4), Brandi Scoggins (1-for-3) and Danielle Lynn (1-for-2).
