Oregon, Miernicki Win Duck Invitational
03/23/10 | Men's Golf
JUNCTION CITY, Ore. -- Host school University of Oregon won its second golf tournament of the season, shooting 7-under 1073 at the Oregon Duck Invitational at Shadow Hills Country Club.
Daniel Miernicki took home medalist honors for the home team, closing with a tournament-low round of 67 to finish 7-under and defeat teammate Eugene Wong by two strokes, 209 to 211.
The Ducks, who held a two-stroke lead after 36 holes on Monday, were the only squad to score under par in final round, winning the annual event by seven shots over runner-up Arkansas (Even, 1080).
Oregon backed up Miernicki and Wong with a solid team effort, placing four golfers among the top 16 at the 7,020-yard, par 72 course. Jack Dukeminier (-2, 214), tied for eighth and Sean Maekawa (+3, 219) tied for 16th.
Andrew Vijarro (+5, 221) finished in a tie for 28th and Isaiah Telles (+8, 224) tied for 40th place in the 84-man field.
There was no movement among the top five teams between the second and final rounds as Oregon State, Idaho and Washington State finished third through fifth, respectively, among the 13 participating schools.
Wong started the final round in a four-way tie for first and had a bird's eye view of his teammate's performance, watching as Miernicki played in the group in front of his. A medalist himself this season at the USC Invitational, Wong was the only player at the tourney to shoot under par in all three rounds, but his 71 on Tuesday wasn't enough to keep the top spot.
Miernicki tied for the tournament lead with 13 birdies over 54 holes and was one of only four golfers to average less than par on par 4s.
UO's Jack Paton (+9, 225), Tyler Parker (+12, 228), Marshall Colby (+13, 229) and Jack Pennington (+40, 256) all competed as individuals. Paton shot 73 in the final round to tie for 44th.
The Ducks resume play on Thursday at the Barona Collegiate Cup hosted by San Diego State.
